    Aqua-Ducks Threaten
Records in OSC Meet
By 1*1111. JOHNSON
Oregon University's varsity
swimmers hope to break some all
time Oregon records when they
meet Oregon State in the local
Mens’ Pool Saturday afternoon.
'“"Joe”Nishimoto, who shattered
three enemy pool records during the
Ducks’ recent invasion o fthe In
land Empire country, has an ex
cellent chance to become a mem
ber of the all-time all-Oregon
swimming team. In order to qual
ify for that position, he must swim
the 220 or 440-yard freestyle faster
than the present members of the
all-time team have done. One of
the present members, Ft. Smith,
swam the 220 with a time of 2:19.0,
and Nishimoto will become a mem
ber is he breaks that mark.
Smith, who graduated in 1943,
also qualified for the all-time all
Oregon team in the 440-yard free
style, which he swam with a mark
at 5:07.0. Nishimoto has an excel
lent chance to brea kthis record
Saturday.
Santo Shows Speed
In the 100-yard freestyle, Louis
Santos or Bill Vannatta can be
come members of the alll-time team
by negotiating the course in less
than 54.1 seconds. Santos shattered
that mark Tuesday in a practice
swim as he completed the tour in
53.4 seconds, but his record is un
official, since it was not made in an
official meet. Vannatta swam the
100 yard's in 54.3 seconds yesterday
afternoon in another unofficial
practice swim.
Stan Hargrave also has a chance
to qualify for the all-time all-Ore
gon squad. If he can break Earl
Walters’ mark of 1:02.8 in the 100
yard backstroke, he will be placed
on the squad as a 300-yard medley
relay man. Hargrave’s best time
this year was 1:04.0.

One vitally important game and
two “also ran” tilts were on Wed
nesday’s IM basketball slate. The
winners were Delta Tau Delta, Del
ta Upsilon, and the Agates.
An exceptionally rugged game
saw the Delts smack Phi Kappa
Sigma 15-9 and gain the co-champ
ionship with Minturn for league
one. Minturn and the Delts will
have a post-season game before the
finals to decide the number one
spot. In an earlier fracas the Delts
tipped Minturn 19-15.
Paul Barrow paced the Delt win
with five points although Bill Ly
ons, Phi Kap guard, was high for
the game with seven. At half-time
the winners led 11-3.
Off and Running
“Indoor” track was the theme as
the Agates squeezed out a 11-8 win
over the Philadelphia House. The
8-6 half-time score favored the
Agate quint.
In the only “B” game on the slate
Delta Upsilon toppled the Campbell
Club 29-8. The winners led 7-4 at
half-time. Clyde Jones and Forrest
Garrigus paced the winners with
nine and eight points respectively.
Roy Brothers had six for the losers.
Sigma Chi reached the quarter
finals of handball competition with
a "3-0” victory over Minturn. Jack
Smith and Pat Wohlers scored
singles victories; Darhl Davis and
Tom MacDonald teamed up for the
doubles win.

Outpaddle OSC
With a final score of 32-16, the
Amphibians defeated the Sea

an informal “playday meet” in Cor
vallis, Feb. 11.
All swimmers participated in
“Musical Boards” with Sharon
Langdon of State winning the indi
vidual free style and the Amphibs
capturing the rest. The breast
stroke and back crawl was won by
Joan Skordahl, while the “Let ’er
Rip” relay winners were Delores
Parrish and Shirley Smart.
CORVALLIS — Oregon State
beat the Idaho Vandals 60-49 here
tonight before 5,460 fans to sweep
the two game series and keep in
the running for Northern Division
basketball title honors.
The Beavers showed better shoot
ing and floor work tonight and they
often stole the ball from the Van
dals during the second half. Idaho
never took the lead during the
match, But the Vandals did tie the
Beavers four times in the first half
at 2, 4, 11, and 13.
Haltftime score was OSC 27 and
Idaho 23.
OSC’s biggest first half lead was
eight points. Bob Payne paced the
Beavers with game scoring honors
with 17 points. Bob Pritchett led
the Vandals.
Shooting accuracy tells much of
the game’s story. Oregon State hit
a high average of .460 by sinking
23 out of 50 shots. Idaho ended up
with a .283 average on 17 baskets
on 60 tries.
Idaho goes to Eugene for a two
game series with Oregon this week
end. Oregon State is idle until Feb.
24 when it plays Oregon here.

Gordon Signs
With Cleveland
CLEVELAND, O.—(UP) —The
Cleveland Indians Wednesday an
nounced the signing of Second
Baseman Joe Gordon, who pre
viously had expressed a desire to
bow out of major league baseball.
The veteran Gordon, who at 35 is
still regarded one of the best second
basemen in the business, came to
terms with General Manager Hank
Greenberg in a long distance tele
phone call from his home in Eu
gene, Ore.
Greenberg said Gordon had sign
ed a one year contract at the same
salary he received in 1949. He was
and it was believed that a pay cut
paid a reported $35,000 last year
of $5000 in the first contract mail
ed him for this year has been re
stored.
“The matter of Joe’s salary was
never really a problem,” Green
berg said. “Joe had asked us for his
unconditional release so that he
could manage a club in the Pacific
Coast League.
“We could hardly comply with this
request in view of the fact that Gor
don is still the best second baseman
in the American League.”

A month of inactivity iri Confer
ence basketball action apparently
didn’t dull the shoottng eye of
Southern California’s Bill Shar
man, who has made a one-man
show out o fthe PCC Southern Divi
sion scoring race.
When the Southern teams resum
ed action last week the Trojan
sharpshooter threw in 48 points on
one weekend. That boosted his six
game PCC total to 138 points—an
average of 23 points a game. That
average gives him a comfortable
bulge over George Yardley of Stan
ford, who has averaged 16.8 points
a game.
