Oregon's Ducks, their Northern Division championship hopes shattered by the week end’s double defeat at the hands of the Univer sity of Idaho, will try to make it a 2-2 affair to morrow and Wednesday when they tangle with Washington State College. to seize an early 5-0 lead, and tney remained ahead throughout the meet. One of the highlights of the af ternoon was a diving duel between Beaver Ray Staub, Northern Divi sion titlist in 1947 and 1948, and Oregon’s Jim Stanley, who captur ed the same crown last year. Staub Takes Diving Staub outpointed Stanley in a close battle, and afterwards, ex Duck star Earl Walters presented certificates to Staub and Stanley, awarding them with berths on Nor thern Division All-Star teams for 1948 and 1949, respectively. Just before the diving activities, Oregon’s Louis Santos set a new Oregon-Oregon State meet record in the 200-yard individual medley as he completed the distance with a time of 2:32.8, shattering the old record (2:33.5) set by Earl Walters of Oregon in 1949. Nishimoto High Man Joe Nishimoto scored 10 points for the Ducks as he won the 220 and 440-yard freestyle races and cap tured' high-point honors for the meet. SaiTtos was next with 9.75 points and Dick Vannatta followed with 6.75. Nishimoto and Vannatta were elected co-captains of the team yes terday morning. Ajax McGurk says Congress is meeting to take up the Marshall plan and decide whether Europe shall be saved by the Republicans or the Democrats. UCLA, USC Lead Teams In SouthlandI_ UCLA and Southern California are still perched securely on top of the Southern Division basketball standings as the second half of the season gets underway this week. The Trojans and Bruins beat each other in successive nights in the last series before the semesters ended season play. Since then, Johnny Wooden’s amazing Bruins have swept games with four non conference foes and all indications point to a Bruin victory in the title chase. Dons Lose and Win SC invaded the San Francisco area last week and met too good a team in the San Francisco Dons, losing 55-41. Bay area sports scribes immediately boomed the Dons for National ratings until California’s lowly Bears came along the final night and knocked them out of their rosy heaven. California is beginning to show some life. In their series with Stan ford, the Bears swept both games. What they can do when conference play resumes is another matter. Trojans Now On Fire Despite their defeat by San Fran cisco—which lately is no easy team to beat in any league—the Trojans have shown as much spark as the Bruins. Star SC forward Bill Shar man currently is breaking all scor ing records and before the season’s end, may surpass the record set by Stanford’s Hank Lusetti. But the Trojans have to face a jinx in their series with UCLA. Since Johnny Wooden took over, the Bruins have won 21 out of 23 games on their home court and have never lost to SC there. Bad shooting on the part of Ore gon and dead-eye accuracy for Ida ho spelled the main difference in the two clubs both nights, but Ida ho's hard running defense of the Warren fast break and the ability of the Vandals to crash through the Webfoots defense with their floor plays also accounted for part of the margin. Friday Score 62-44 Friday’s score was 62-44 for Ida ho. At the beginning of the second half, the Vandals held the Ducks to three field goals in 14 minutes, and-when the Webfoots finally found the hoop, they were behind by a 51-29 count. Again and again in the second half, surprise starter Dick Reed, Dick Geisler, Bob Sheller, and other Vandals poured through the Duck defense to set up plays. This is something that the home Idaho crowd hasn’t seen all year, but they saw it Friday night. For Idaho the first night, ite was Reed, the little reserve, who potted 17 points to lead all scorers. Geisler was second with 14. Oregon’s high man was Will Ur ban, with 12 points. Paul Sowers followed with nine markers. Saturday Night Count 44-34 Saturday night also saw the Ducks fall apart in the second half and end up on the short end of a 44-34 count. For 12 minutes in the last half, Oregon failed to hit the hoop. And this came after a slight brust which saw the Webfoots take the lead by one point after Mel Streeter hit a pivot shot from the keyhole for a 30-29 Oregon Margin. By the time Oregon -recovered, the count was 42-30 against a Web foot victory, and Idaho travelled to success from there on in. In the low scoring Saturday night contest, Geisler was high man for Idaho with 15 points, in front of Jenkins who potted 12. Keller High Duck For Oregon, little Jack.
