Speech Contest
Offers Prizes
An all-University extemporan
eous speaking contest will be held
sometime during the first part of
February, Dr. E. R. Nichols, pro
fessor of speech, announced re
cently.
Prizes will be offered to contest
ants in amount of $50 for first,
$30 for second, and $20 for third
from the Jewett fund.
The general subject chosen for
students to use as a basis for
preparation is the United States
Foreign Policy. After preparation
on this subject, students will parti
cipate in a preliminary round of
speaking. Those selected from this
round will compete in the final
contest.
Dates for both the preliminary
and final rounds will be announced.
Subjects for speaking at both
contests will be sub-topics of the
general question, for example:
What is the present United States
foreign policy toward the Far
East?
Pi Delts Set Luncheon
Luncheon meeting's each Thurs
day at the Anchorage have been
scheduled by Pi Delta Phi, French
honor society. The first of the
meetings, which will be both social
and business, with French conver
sation, was held this Thursday.

Social Science Associate Meets
Today With University Officials
Elbridge Sibley, of the Social Science Research Council in Wash
ington, D.C., is on the campus today meeting with University officials.
Executive associate in charge of administration of fellowships and
grants-in-aid for the council, Sibley will hold conferences throughout
the day.
He is visiting 18 universities to discover persons who might poten
tially be Fellows of the Social Science Research Council—either pre
doctoral or postdoctoral. The council awards grants for research work
to certain university professors.
At noon he will be honored at a luncheon at the Anchorage Cafe,
where President Harry K. Newburn will preside. Others at the luncheon
will be R, D. Clark, assistant to the dean of the- College of Liberal
Arts; heads of the social science departments, and staff members.
Formerly professor of sociology and social statistics at Bowdoin
College, Sibley Is the author of various articles and the book “Recruit
ment. Selection, and Training of Social Scientists.”
He will leave Oregon Saturday morning for the University of
California.
