Of Heavies Friday; Charles
Named Pre-Fight Favorite
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 12
(UP)—Dusky Ezzard Charles, the
NBA heavyweight champion from
Cincinnati, was installed as a 5-1
favorite today to whip challenger
Pat Valentino in Friday night’s
title bout.
As both fighters wound up their
training for the 15-round title
bout the first heavyweight cham
pionship brawl in San Francisco
la 40 years enthusiasm reached a
fever pitch in the San Francisco
streets. There was little betting on
Valentino to win the crown but
he is a sentimental favorite; and
there are a lot of bets being made
that he goes the distance.
The Cow Palace, a huge state
owned structure being used the
first time for a professional sport,
villi seat just about 17,000 fans and
indications are that at least 15,000
v dl view the bout and pay at least
$175,000 for the privilege.
Charles, who has combined a
flood of personal appearances at
the races, football games, etc.,
since he started training here,
wound up his pre-fight work today
at national hall with former Cham
pion Joe Louis among the large
crowd watching the workout. Val
entino tucked his paraphernalia
away yesterday. Both men have
trained down to their fighting
weight.
The Champion probably will
weigh in at about 180 pounds and
Valentino five pounds heavier.
The California State Athletic
Commission has announced that it
will not name a referee until Fri
day morning. In the meantime,
pr omoter William P. Kyne rejected
the services of former Champion
Jack Dempsey, who asked $5,000
tc handle the job.
The squabble over the size of the
ring was settled when a ring 10
fed, six inches, was agreed upon.
• Besides a referee, there will be
th ee judges at ringside in case a
decision is needed. They will ballot
on the California point system of
11 points to the round.
| The records show that Charles
and Valentino both started their
boxing careers in 1940; both spent
some time in the service—and have
met three common opponents: Joey
Maxim, Jimmy Bivins and Fitzy
Fitzpatrick.
Off the returns, Charles looked
the better against the three men—
but by no means decisively. Maxim
and Valentino drew twice; Maxim
lost three close decisions to Char
les. Bivins and Charles met four
times, with Charles winning three
and losing one. Bivins decisioned
Valentino twice- both times very
close. Fitzy Fitzpatrick was kay
oed twice by Charles; and he kay
oed Valentino once.
The records also show that Char
les has had 70 professional fights;
won 64 (39 by knockouts); had
one draw and lost five. He has been
kayoed once—by veteran Lloyd
Marshall of Sacramento.

Preparing for the invasion of
Colorado Saturday, Oregon’s Ducks
went through another scrimmage
session with pads yesterday.
Offense against the Buffalo de
fensive system occupied half the
scrimmage time in yesterday s
workout. Speculation is thick over
what kind of offensive system Col
orado Coach Dallas Ward will use
in the Hayward Field tilt.
From Minnesota, Ward will
probably not use a “T” formation,
but is more likely to run his char
ges from a single wing or double
wing atack. Fans will be sure to
see style of play not yet met by
the Webfoots this year.
Jim Aiken continues to give his
gridders conditioning exercises
such as sled pushing, calesthenics,
and plenty of running, amounting
to four laps around the practice
field after yesterday’s workout.
WAA V-Ball
In Second Week
WAA intramural volleyball sea
son completes its second week to
day with eleven teams on the prac
tice schedule for this afternoon.
Scheduled for the 4:50 practice
are Alpha Chi Omega, Ann Judson
House, Carson Hall, Alpha Gamma
Delta, Sigma Kappa, Pi Beta Phi,
and Alpha Delta Pi. At 5:20 will be
Rebec House, Highland House II,
Delta Zeta, and Highland'House I.
Twenty three teams have signed
up to play according to Phyllis
Rich, intramural manager. Games
will be played in the form of a
double-elimination tournament
from Oct. 24 to Nov. 22. Miss Masil
onis is faculty adviser.

Oregon’s fullback, Sanders, who
has accounted for 341 yards in four
contests, an average of 5.9 yards
per carry. Sanders’ nearest compet
itor is Carpenter, who is 56 yards
off the pace.
STELLE MOST ACCURATE
Washington’s Don O’Leary leads
in passing with 33 completions.
However, Gambold has the best
yardage figure of 464 on 21 com
pletions. Earl Stelle of Oregon
made the outstanding percentage
mark of .677 by completing 21 of 31
tosses.
Joe Cloidt of Washington caught
his passes against OSC to boost his
total for 14 ofr the season, and he
also leads .in yardage from recep
tions with 218. Hal Braly of UCLA
has the best punting average of 45.5
yards per boot.
Sanders leads the PCC scoring
parade with seven touchdowns,
and his teammate, Woodley Lew
is, is in a position to break the
national intercollegiate record
for pass interceptions. The Duck
star has intercepted six in four
games, and the record in 11.
Dick Gray of OSC leads in punt
returns with 167 yards on six re
turns; and Johnson of UCLA leads
in kickoff runbacks with 176 yards
in seven attempts.
The defending co-champions of
the Pacific Coast Conference from
the University of California enter
their important game Saturday
against Southern California with
the best team record in the PCC.
Statistics released today by the
PCC Commissioner’s office indi
cated that California has the best
total offense record and leads in
all defensive departments. The
Cal recbrd stands on three games,
however. Statistics for Califor
nia’s fourth game were not re
ported.
Stanford holds a slight edge over
the Bears in rushing offense. The
Indians have averaged 245.2 yards
per game as compared to 243 for
California.
DUCKS PER CENT WISE
The team leader in pass comple
tions is Washington. Due mainly to
the efforts of Don O’Leary, the
Huskies have completed 44 passes
in four games. However, Oregon
and Southern California have the
best averages. The Ducks have hit
.609 and USC .607.
The Bears have been equally tough
on rushing and passing defense.
In the three games reported, the
Bears have allowed an average of
116.6 yards per game on the ground
and only 13 completed passes for
171 yards.
