General Clark Visits
Campus, Inspects ROTC
The highest army “brass-hat” ever to pay a visit to Oregon cam
pus dropped in here yesterday.
General Mark W. Clark, sporting four silver stars, stopped long
enough to inspect ROTC facilities and confer with University officials.
The general seemed pleased with the steps already completed to
wards unification of the armed srvics.
“A separate army, navy, and airforce is all wrong,” he said. “The
armed forces should be under the direction of one man. The services
must develop with unity instead of disunity.”
The Sixth Corps area, under the direction of General Clark, is the
“pilot” model for unification.
Our area does the experimenting,” he continued. Progress in unifi
cation has made some headway in several branches of the service—
recruiting, public information, and the ROTC.
Clark has been favorably impressed with the new secretary of na
tional defense, Louis A. Johnson, and believes that Johnson is the
“right man” to unify the armed services.

What about the present ROTC program ?
The former wartime commander of the Fifth army in Italy termed
the University’s ROTC program, under the direction of Col. Frank R.
Maerdian, "typical of the high standard of training offered in schools
throughout the country.
"Our national security rests with the young people of America,”
he said. “They must be trained and organized into one team for peace,
and also be prepared as a team to win in battle.”
The world situation isn’t too alarming, according to the general.
"If we are to have peace,” he remarked, “The United States must
do two things—establish its national security and maintain its ideals
of democracy.”
