UO Debaters
Return Monday
From California
Oregon debaters returned Mon
day after participating in the Red
lands University Invitational tour
nament, March 23 through 25 at
Redlands, Calif.
Jerry Miller and Don Dimick rep
resented Oregon in the upper divi
sion tournament while Fred Risser
and Jim Tucker participated in the
lower division contests. Dimick par-'
ticipated in extemporaneous speak
ing, Miller in oratory, Risser in low
er division extempore and Tucker in
impromptu.
Subject for the debate tourna
ment was: “Resolved that the Fed
eral government should equalize
educational opportunities in tax
supported schools by means of an
nual grants.’’
Fifty colleges and universities
from six states competed in the an
nual debate tournament which al
ternates between Redlands and the
College of the Pacific.
The team of Risser and Tucker
reached the semi-finals in the lower
division against what Dr. E. R.
Nichols, director of forensic, term
ed very good teams. Other Oregon
participants failed to place.
The University of Arizona won
the southern championship and the
right to participate in the West
Foint tournament. The University
of Southern California lead in the
upper division., tournament. Final
and complete results were not an
nounced.
French Comedy
Starts April 1
“Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme,” a
comedy-ballet by the French play
right Moliere, will be presented un
der the auspices of the French de
partment in the University Guild
hall, April 1, 2, and 4 starting at 8
p.m. The cast will also make a
trip to Portland on April 6 to give
a performance in the Civic theater.
Directed Dy Dick Rayburn, with
R. L. Picard, assistant professor of
Romance languages in charge of
production, the members of the
cast are: Ed Van Natta, Coralie
Nelson, Bill Wallace, Beverly Rohr
er, Glenn Morgan, Nancy Moran,
Jim Eakin, Ann Thompson, Jo
Anne Jarvis, Julian Hoffman, Jim
Blue, and William Johnson.
The plot revolves around a
wealthy middle-class Frenchman
(played by Ed Van Natta) who, as
piring to become cultured, employs
a number of tutors. He is not able
to perceive that he is being swin
dled on all sides, and his attempt
to have his daughter married to
the son of the Grand Turk devel
ops into a hilarious climax.
Tickets for the play may be pur
chased for 50 cents at the box of
fice in Johnson hall between the
hours of 10 a.m. and 12, and from
1 o’clock to 5 in the afternoon. On
Friday, Saturday, and Monday—
the days of the performances—the
box office will remain open until
8 p.m.

Concert Series
Symphony Set
Marking its second appearance ;
in two years, the Minneapolis Sym
phony orchestra conducted by Di
mitri Mitropoulos, will perform in
McArthur court Friday, April 8,
at 8:15 p.m.
Mitropoulos, who conducts with
out the use of a baton or even a
score, has led this group of 90 mu
sicians since his debut with the
Boston Symphony in 1936.
The group plays regularly at its
home, University of Minnesota be- j
fore the largest average concert:
audiences in the United States.
More than 4000 people attend these
concerts.
For the special benefit of stu
dents and faculty members an ad- i
ditional recital will be given by!
a Chamber Music ensemble com- :
posed of Minneapolis symphony
members and headed by their con
cert master. This performance
will also be conducted by Mitrop
oulos.
The ensemble will play in the
music school auditorium at 4 p.m.,
on Friday, the afternoon before the
evening concert of the ^orchestra.
This extra recital will be free to !
students and faculty members. It
has been arranged by Arnold El
ston, associate professor of music.

will 'be held tonight at 7 in the
