capable of one of these jobs may
apply, regardless of experience or
time put in on the publication, or

Orchestra Set
For Next Show
Piano and harp solos will be
featured at the University Sym
phony orchestra concert Tuesday
night, March 8, 8:15 p.m. in the
school of music auditorium.
, Featured pianist in Mozart's
“Concerto No. 17 in G Major” will
be Sylvia Killman, graduate stu
dent in music from Portland. Solo
parts in “Dances for Harp and
Strings” by Debussy will be per
formed on the harp by Doris Helen
Calkins, instructor in harp from
Eugene.
Other numbers included in the
evening’s program will be “Aca
demic Festival Overture” by
Brahms and “Symphony No. 8 in
F Major, Opus 93” by Beethoven.
Dr. Edmund A. Cyckler, asso
ciate professor of musicology will
direct the 70-piece orchestra.
Omer to Speak
On Cosmology
Monday Night
Dr. Guy C. Omer, assistant pro
£ssor of physics, will speak on
•‘Cosmology, the Physics of the
Universe” Monday, March 7, at 8
p.m. in 103 Deady.
The lecture, being sponsored by
Sigma Psi, national science hon
orary, will be open to all students
and general public, according to
word received from Dr. E. G. Eb
bighausen, associate professor of
physics.
.. Cosmology, which is the study of
the properties and structure of the
ilniverse, has received much pub
lic attention recently with the in
stallation of the 200-inch telescope
atop Mt. Palomar.
One of the reasons construction
of the huge instrument was under
taken was to implement study in
this field. Scientists hope it will
aid them in determining whether
the universe is finite, whether the
nebulae are receding, as has been
theorized.
' ‘Dr. Omer came to Oregon last
fall from the California Institute
of Technology, where he worked
with the eminent cosmologist, Dr.
Richard Tolman.

Southern Bloc Hopes
To Prevent Filibuster
WASHINGTON, March 4 (AP)
Southern Democrats tonight
claimed a whopping majority to
beat down an expected administra
tion-backed attempt to choke off
their five-day filibuster in the sen
ate.
Senator Russell (D-Ga) told a re
porter that a private poll taken by
the southerners indicates they
have 58 votes.
All they need is 49 votes, a simple
majority, to override an expected
ruling by vice president Barkley in
favor of ending the debate quickly.
“We have enough votes to defeat

the effort to break the filibuster
against this proposed rules change,”
Russell said at a late hour.
An associated press survey show
ed the southern bloc gaining sup
port, but less heavily than Russell
claimed.
Latest AP figures showed 43 sen
ators—24 democrats and 19 repub
licans—on record as saying they
will vote "no” on efforts to gag the
debate by a possible ruling from
the chair.
Nineteen senators — 16 Demo
crats and 3 republicans—said they
would vote "yes.”
