BUDAPEST, Feb. 15—(API —
The chief spokesman of Hungar
ian Communists now says Josef
„ Cardinal Mindszenty was brought
to trial only after the Vatican had
passed up an opportunity to
withdraw him.
The spokesman, told a mass
meeting last night Hungary offi
cially informed the Vatican about
all charges against the Cardinal
“in due time, before the trial,” to
give the Vatican a chance to re
move him.
“We would have let Mindszen
ty go, only to help reconciliation
between church and state,” Josef

Verne Bright, author of “Moun
tain Men,” read excerpts from his
narrative poem to an audience in
the library browsing room yes
terday afternoon. His 190-page
work was discussed by R. V. Mills,
assistant professor of English,
during the first part of the hour.
Commenting upon the swift
moving story about the early
westerners, professor Mills said
he believed it is the best narrative
poem on a Western subject, and
that Bright is probably on the
verge of becoming a major Amer
ican poet.
The career of Verne Bright
closely parallels other Northwest
ern writers who learned human
nature the hard way, knocking
around logging camps, riding
freight trains, and sometimes
getting a few terms of college
training between jobs.
“During a rather varied life I’ve
become acquainted with many
types of people,” he said, “and
I’ve tried to make them live for
others through poetry.”
