Wiley Tosses in 19 Points While Gayda Stymied By DICK CRAMER Oregon’s scrappy Webfoots, paced by Roger Wiley’s stellar 19-point performance, handed Washington State’s defensive minded Cougars a 49-38 trouncing on McArthur Court last night. The loss dropped WSC to second place behind idle Ore gon State. Wiley was the big cog in the Duck win, whirling in 10 points in the first half and nine more following intermission. The scor ing duel between the Webfoot star pivotman and the Cougars highly rated forward, Eddie Gayda, fail ed to materialize. Will Urban stuck to Gayda like glue, and all the 205 pound junior could get was four gift tosses. He didn't get a single field goal. f ‘Hot Dog’ Hot Big Rog was strictly on the hot side, hitting seven for thirteen from the field, for a very good .539 aver age. He also hit five out of six free throw attempts. The splurge, along with Gayda’s lack of points, gave W iley a 53 point bulge over the Cougar. He lias 1G3 points in 11 contests for a 14.8 av erage, compared to Gayda’s 110 in 9 games for 12.2. Johnny Neeley, who was able to play only briefly, under doctor’s or deis, hit the first bucket of the game in the opening 10 seconds and the Webfoots were off and never headed or tied. Ducks Slowly Build Lead The game started slowly, with the Ducks gradually building up their lead. Five minutes had gone by before Bob Gambold canned the first fielder for the Cougars, and t he narrowest they were able to cut the Oregon lead after that was to three points. The VVelifoots won the game in the first half, leading 30-19 at in termission. Washington State was able to clbse that margin in the second half, but Oregon came back to win by the 11 points they had built up in the initial period. The Cougars opened up their at tack a little after halftime, with Bob Elliot canning two shots in the first minute. Cut 13-Point Swarth Three minutes went by before Paul Sowers dunked in a one hand er for Oregon’s first talies, but Wiley added a fast break lay-in and Sowers dropped in two from the gift line for a 13 point margin. From there WSC closed it down to five points, at 3(5-31, with Leon Mangis’ long two-handers doing the dirty work. Gametime is 8 p.m. free throws by Wiley, Sowers, again Sowers, and another by Wil ey, pulled the Webfoots away to 43-32 and they coasted in from there. Charity Tosses Help Washington State- had a better percentage from the field, .313 to .291, but Oregon had one more bucket and nine more free throws. The Ducks were more proficient at foul shooting, canning 17 of 27 tries to 8 out of 16 for WSC. Sowers chipped in with 10 points and played a fine floor game. Gayda, though held down from the field, did well on the boards, outplaying everybody else in that respect. Elliott, with eight, and Gambold, with seven, were tops for the Cougars in scoring. WILEY GOES WILD — That’s the story of Big Roger Wiley’s five-star performance against Washington State last night when he dropped in 19 points. In his last three games, “Hot Dog” has rimmed 58 tallies, shoving him far in front in ND scoring. At 6:15 tonight they take on Marshfield High school. With but five minutes to play in last night's contest, and Bobby Hamilton’s Medford cagers behind 38-24, the Tigers began bombing the hoop from all angles and con nected on four straight baskets be fore the Frosh could score. Settecase, Chaney Come Through Phil Settecase ended the Duck ling scoring drought with a left hander from the key, and sub center John Chaney iced things with a field goal and a pair of free throws. The game started out as a walk away for the visitors, as Guard Jack Morris counted five points to none for the Frosh. Duckling Forward Bill Clausen promptly banged in a one-handed push shot from the corner to keep his mates in the game at this point. Morris resumed his point-pitch ing tempo with four more tallies to make the score, Morris 9, Frosh 8.
