Atom Bomb
Discussion
To Be Held
Control of atomic energy will be
the problem discussed at a joint In
ternational Relations club—Unit
ed World Federalists meeting at
7:30 p. m. Tuesday in 207 Chapman.
Forum speakers will be Egeert
Wengert, head of the political sci
ence school, and R. T. Ellickson, as
sociate dean of the graduate school
and professor of physics.
In 1946 Wengert worked with the
Atomic Energy commission in
transfering atomic control from
military to civilian hands. Ellick
son was a physicist at Oakridge
while the bomb was still a top sec
ret.
Glenn Morgan, IRC president,
said the subject had reached a new
phase of seriousness since “the ac
tion of the United Nations Atomic
Energy Committee in ceasing to
meet in view of the lack U. S.—Russ
agreement.”
Herb Weiss, president of the Eu
gene Student Federalists of the
UWF, said “atomic control is a ser
ious question and should be handled
by the UN.
“This was impossible in the past
because of lack of UN authority ov
er the member nations.
“Our purpose in presenting this
problem is to clarify the issue in the
hope that people will come to real
ize the necessity for a strong inter
national government.”
Following the forum, the film
“Where Will You Hide,” concerning
the effects of an atom bombing, will
be shown through the auspices of
the Audio Visual department.
