Miller's Goal Severs Tie;
Clubs Go Again Tonight

A curly-haired 5-foot, 9-inch guard named Nat Miller flipped
ir. a 20-foot field goal from the side in the last five seconds to
give Long Island University a 68-66 win over Oregon in a wild
and thrilling ball game that was easily the best of the year play
ed in Mac Court.
The two squads square off again tonight at 8 p. m.
Miller was the hero of the tilt, having tied the score at 66-66
with a tip in just five seconds be
fore he hit his game-winning buck
et, which came after he stole the
ball. But he had lots of help from
Lou Lipman, a balding father who
led the Blackbirds in scoring with
17 points and directed their floor
lirame before fouling out in the last
"minute*
Foul Shots Misfire
The Webfoots, who early in the
•/second half boasted a 15-point bul
ge over the New Yorkers, had three
chances from the foul line in the
last minute, with tlie score then be
ing 66-64. But Bob Lavey, then Rog
Wiley, then Paul Sowers all missed
gifters to set tlie stage for Miller’s
tying and winning buckets.
The entire game was fast-mov
ing and had the 6,000 spectators on
the edge of their seats throughout.
Play opened fast, Lipman can
~ tung a 16ng two-hander from 30
feet on the first shot of the game.
Wiley, who led Webfoot scoring
with 16 counters, flipped in a hook
/shot to knot the score.
Sophomores Deliver
From there the Blackbirds mov
ed into 6-2 and 8-4 leads, their long
est of the night.
But then John Warren’s sopho
more stars, Will Urban and Johnny
iNeeley, paced the Ducks into a 24
l!t lead with eight minutes remain
ling in the first half. Fielders by
Dick Feurtado and Art Tropin then
cut the margin to two points.
Warren substituted his second
unit at this point, and led by Dale
Warberg, the reserves caught fire
and built up the margin that gave
the Webfoots the first half lead.
Quickies for Warberg
Warberg, Lynn Hamilton, War
berg again, and then two gifters by
Bob Don, with only a bucket by tall
Sherman White for the Blackbirds,
gave the legulars a 34-25 margin
when they came back with a min
ute left to go. ,
From there, the Ducks rolled to a 1
"d-28 halftime margin. At this
point the Webfoots had a tremen
dous .415 average from the field,
\ Idle Long Island's was only .268.
After intermission, Neeley flip
ped in a long two-hander and Sow
ers hit from the corner to give Ore
gon the biggest lead of the game. 15

Blackbirds Close In
But from here on in, the Black
birds were checking closely all over

stealing the ball. Oregon managed
to keep the margin at close to ten
points until midway in the second
half, when LIU began to close the

Sunday night sees the Eugene Redwings again take the lo
cal ice as they meet the Corvallis Beavers, fresh from a win over
Salem, in Oregon Hockey League play.
The Redwings, dropped their last game to Portland and are
now in a tie for first place league honors. ,
Natator Team Readies
For Vital Husky Meet
With the crucial meet with
the ND defending champions,
the University of Washington,
a week away, the cry at the
Men’s Pool is, “work, work,
work.”
Although the score against
the Beavers last Saturday was the
most lopsided in history, Coach
John Borchardt is definitely not
happy with the times of most of his
swimmers. The tally is no indica
tion of their shape and the watch
times turned in revealed many
weaknesses. The sprinters especi
ally showed their weak points last
Saturday, as did the breaststrokers
and distance men.
Workouts Pick ITp
However, all of this is being cor
rected fast with the accent on
sprints and time-cutting work
which should pey off in the near fu
ture. The meet with Washington
will be a week from today.
Today and Sunday the annual
City of Portland AAU swimming
championships will be held at the
Multnomah Athletic Club, and the
University will be ably represented.

Lead in Scoring
Coach Don Kirsch’s fresh
man basketball squad racked
up their seventh win in eight
starts in last night’s varsity
prelim by defeating the Cottage
Grove Lions, 45-32.
The frosh raced to an early
lead as their fast break clicked
with precision and gave them nine
points before their opponents could
dent the scoring column.
Ken Hunt and Mouse Owens,
Oregon’s starting guard combo,
were the sparkplugs as Hunt sank
two baskets on passes from Owens.
Visitors Fight Back
Their early momentum slacked
off slightly later, however, and
Cottage Grove slowly chopped
away at the lead. ot.iu ...
This was mainly due to the
shooting accuracy of Bob Cook,
Lion center, who had nine points
at halftime.
Bob Dusenberry’s Lions pulled
up to within one point of the fresh
men at the halfway mark, trailing
20-19.
Yearlings Reclaim Margin
The frosh again poured on the
coal and scored 14 third quarter
points to eight for Cottage Grove.
