Hamilton Leaves
Service For Pitt
ANNAPOLIS, Md„ Jan. 25 (AP)
Tom Hamilton wound up today
within a short distance of where
more than 25 years ago he started a
Navy career which prominently
identified him with athletics.
The big Navy officer went across
the river to the North Severn Ac
tivities Center to be separated from
the service. He had been marking
time for a month, waiting to take
over as Athletic Director at Pitts
burgh.
He will be officially retired on
Feb. 1. Then he will be promoted
from captain to rear adtairal.
Hamilton requested retirement in
December to take the Pitt job. In
accepting, he had said his place was
in athletics, intimating the Navy
had no such long-time .position for
him.

Blackbirds Picked
Over Duck Quint
Though not listed as one of the top teams in the counti), LITj
will come onto the floor Frida}- night a heavy favorite o\er Oie
gon. The Blackbirds will boast a better record and a greater all
around height advantage than the home town Webfoots.
John Warren sent his charges through another long drill
yesterday in readying them for the coming series. And again,
the Oregon Frosh were the opposition for the drill.
Both teams looked a little sharper than they had on Mondar,
but still a long way from their top performances of the season.
The YVebfoots will have to De
in top shape against Clair Bee
and his invaders if they are to
cop either of the games.
LIU is a “mystery" team, lit
tle being known about them.
They have a 12-won 5-lost record
before their series here against
some of the better teams in the
East. And they have a big front
line. White and Sherer are both six
inches above the six foot mark, and
French is only an inch shorter.
Also expected to be in the lineup
is Lipnian, who bucketed 24 points
in the last meeting of the two
quints. That was in Madison Square
Garden last year.
The big LIU front line is expected
to cause the Ducks lots of trouble
Williamson Promises Wisconsin
'Best Football Team Possible'
EASTON, Pa., Jan. 25 (AP)—Ivy
Williamson today promised Wiscon
sin University “the best football
team possible" and in return he ex
pects co-operation of the students
and alumni.
Speaking from his office at La
Fayette college where the 38-year
old former Michigan grid star was
cleaning up odds and ends, William
son said Wisconsin would get “fun
damental and sound football.”
“We’ll operate from a standard
T formation with and without the
man in motion. Also we’ll occasion
ally split the line and do a lot of
passing.”

year, was most prominently men

PULLMAN, Jan. 25 (AP)—Win,
lose, or draw, the University of Ida
ho will have a tough time keeping
the Washington State college bas
ketball team from scoring its 1000th
point Saturday night.
Washington State clipped the
Vandals 54 to 37 last Saturday at
Moscow and point no. 54 was no. 999
for the season. Idaho comes to the
Cougar gym Saturday night and the
first Washington State player to hit
the net will run the total into the
four-digit bracket.
and might well bring 6-foot 8-inch
Bob Amacher into the lineup. He
will probably see plenty of action
whether he starts or not.
Bee is expected to use a slow,
Eastern style of attack, with the
emphasis on ball control. The Black-_
birds ar e exponents of set plays and
two handed shooting, neither of
which are very common on the Pa
cific Coast today.
The Webfoots, led by the leading
scorer in the Northern Division,
Roger Wiley, are expected to im
prove on their poor shooting from
the field against Washington. In
Seattle, the Webfoots only hit 21
and 18 per cent of their shots from
the field.
A correction in the official scor
ing already released gives Paul
Sowers, Duck guard, a tie for sec
ond place in scoring with Bill Van
denburgh. Both hoopsters have 71
tallies. Roger Wiley, with 105, is
still setting the pace.
As usual, the Frosh will play pre
liminary games before the varsity
tilts. Friday night they meet the
highly-touted Cottage Grove quint,
one of the powerhouses in District
Six. Saturday night it will be Cen
tral Catholic of Portland, coached
by a former Webfoot star, Roy See
borg.
