Washington Series Important
Ducklings
Face OSC
Rooks at 8
Oregon’s frosh basketball team
will get its first tough test of the
season tonight in Corvallis against
the highly touted Roolcs of OSC.
Coach Walt Kirch’s frosh have
the seasonal experience edge, with
■4,Ux victories under their belts
.against one game for the Rooks, a
SC-42 win over the Lebanon high
quintet.
Rook Coach Paul Valenti reput
edly has the best material in years.
Having worked together only two
weeks, the Rooks reportedly looked
very impressive against the Leba
non high outfit, having a strong
offensive punch, but looking slight
ly ragged on defense.
Best known starter for the young
Aggies will be six foot, six inch
center Bob Edwards of Corvallis
high. Also on the starting list to
night will be forwards Jack Orr of
Grants Pass and Jim Padgett of
Redding, California, who both
worked the backboards strongly in
their only game of the season.
George Allison of McMinnville
and Don White from Portland’s
Washington high will open in the
guard slots against the frosh.
Probable starting line-up for the
Frosh will be Bill Clausen and Bill
Carr at forwards, with Bob Gilbert
at the center slot. Kirsch is ex
pected to start his team of Ken
Hunt and Bill Korpela at guards.
Korpela reportedly has a bad el
bow which may keep him out of
the starting five, in which case he
will be replaced by Bob Ki'ttilson.
Spelling Gilbert at center will be
big Jim Vranizan, who has seen
plenty of action in earlier starts
this season.

I,OS ANGELES, Jan. 20 —(AP)
Henry R. (Red) Sanders, Athletic
director and head football coach at
Vanderbilt University, tonight was
named head grid coach at UCLA.
Athletic director Wilbur Johns
announced the appointment of the
4 A -year-old Sanders after a three
hour conference late today with the
Associated Students Board of con
trol.
Tilt- length and amount of the
contract was not disclosed by Johns.
Insiders surmised it was a com
ji irative long term pact, however,
iiince Sanders is leaving the security
of his Alma Mater at Nashville,
Tenn. The unofficial guesses placed
the figure at a minimum at $15,000
a year.
Wiley to Pace Webfoots
VETERAN ROG WILEY, who left yesterday for Seattle, has seen
plenty of action on the Husky maple and will be the tallest man on
the floor when he opens against the Washington five tonight at 8
o’clock. Wiley is playing his fourth and final season for the Ducks.
Moorhead, Hiatt, Walter
Chosen Aquaduck Heads
George Moorhead, Bob Hiatt, and
Earl Walter were chosen co-cap
tains of the 1949 Oregon swimming
team in a meeting yesterday at the
men’s pool by a triple tie vote.
The three new captains will lead
their team against the water Bea
vers from Corvallis Saturday at
2:30 in the men's pool, in their
first meet of the year.
Moorhead, a three-year letter
winner, is on his way to his fourth
letter for the aquaducks this sea
son. He has been high point winner
for the Oregon swimmers for the
last two seasons. He has been high
point winner for the Oregon swim
mers for the last two seasons, and
once a runner-up in the Northern
division. Moorhead will take on the
Duck sprinting chores this year.
Hiatt, a distance man for the
Ducks for two years, is back to win

Key to Meeting of
Webfoots/ Huskies
Tonight opens the key series of the Northern Division pen-,
nant race for both the University of Oregon and the University .
of Washington when they clash tonight in Seattle.
The Huskies must go all out for a sweep of the two-game
series in order to stay in contention at all, having won only one
of their four games so far. The Webfoots, with a split in six'
games, are also in danger of being eliminated from the race.
The status of Sammy White, the ace Husky forward, will*
decide the favorites roll. If White, the sparkplug of the Wash- •
ington quint, is ready to go, the
! home team will rate as slight fa
vorites. Otherwise, the nod
must go to John Warren’s rap
idly improving Webfoots.
A capacity crowd of 10,000 is
expected in Edmundson Pavil
ion tonight to witness the open
ing game. And the Husky fans
are some of the most partisan in
the Northern Division. The
temperature might be a factor,
also. On January 8, when the Hus
kies met Oregon State, the mercury
was close to 40 degrees, much cold
er than the Ducks home stamping
grounds at McArthur Court.
The Webfoots arrived yesterday
in good physical shape and confi
dent of their ability to down the
Seattle quint. Coach John Warren
plans to start his usual lineup to
night. That will be forwards Will
Urban and Jim Bartelt, center Rog
er Wiley, and guards Paul Sowers
and John Neeley.
This five rolled to impressive
wins over Idaho last weekend, and
Saturday night, showed that they
could come through in the clutch.
With the exception of Wiley and
Bartelt, they are newcomers to the
Northern Division, but they have*
played like veterans.
Just who Art McLarney will start
is still up in the air, but the wily'
Husky mentor will have the strong'- -
est team possible on the floor. If“
White is ready to go, he’ll probably
start, but it is expected that he will *
be available for spot duty only.
LaDon Henson and Bill Vanden- _
burgh, both four inches above tha
six foot mark, are slated to be the"
opening forwards for McLarney, -
with Andy Opacich at one guard __
spot. Either Louie Soriano or Mar
cus Metzger will team with Opa
cich in back court. The center spot
is a toss up between Russ Parthe
mer and Jim Mallory.
Another possible lineup would see'
Vandenburgh handling the pivot -
role with Parthemer moving up to_
a. forward position, the rest of the
team staying the same.
Warren took a total of 12 men to»
Seattle. Besides his opening lineup _
they include Paul Cooper, Bob Don,
Don Peterson, Bob Lavey, Dale"
Warberg, Mel Krause, and Lynn -
Hamilton.
