Soprano Claire Lewis to Give
Senior Recital Thursday Night
Soprano Claire Lewis .
University student Claire Lewis,
soprano, will give her senior re
cital at the music school auditor
ium, at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Janu
ary 13.
Miss Lewis, who has been active
in UO musical .circles during her
years on the campus, will present
a four-part program, which will in
clude numbers by Scarlatti, Rich
ard Strauss, Ravel, and others. The
program will be concluded with
several English-language numbers,
among which are “The men from
the valley of apple pie,” and “The
man with the jelly-bean nose,”
both by Fenner.
Among her past musical activi
ties, Miss Lewis includes a part in
last year’s Beggar’s Opera, two
performances at homecoming
games, radio work, and work with
the UO concert band. She will take
the lead in “The Telephone,” which
is tentatively scheduled for May.
“I plan to go into music profes
sionally after graduation,” she re
veals. “I don't know just what
phase of the field yet—you never
know—it depends upon the breaks.”
But she states very d efinitely that
“it won’t be teaching!”
In addition to her musical activ
ities, Miss Lewis takes an active
interest in dramatics. Her accom
panist for the recital will be Mar
garet Adkins.
Recreation Swim Hours
Winter term recreation hours for
swimming at the Men's pool have
been announced by the physical ed
ucation department. The pool will,
be open at 10 on Tuesday and
Thursday, from 1-3 on Tuesday and
Thursday, and from 2-5 on Satur
day.

ketball race with a thrilling 57-52
victory over California in an over
time contest before a full house of
about 7,500 fans last night.
PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan 8—'The
Stanford basketball team opened
its Pacific Coast Conference’s
Southern Division race with a
clean-cut 61-52 win over UCLA last
night-^but possibly lost its star
forward. George Yardley, the lanky
Stanford star, suffered a wrenched
knee. Seriousness of the injury was
not determined.
