Now attending a Pacific Coast conference meeting at Palm Springs, California, Aiken issued a statement yesterday, saying he Will not go to Lincoln to confer with Nebraska athletic officials, but that he had agreed to confer with Nebraska Athletic Director George “Potsy" Clark at the meeting of football coaches in San Francisco later in the week. Nebraska officials have been searching for a gridiron mentor to replace Clark, who resigned to give his duties as athletic director a full-time status. Candidates listed for the vacant position include Ai ken, Lon Stiner, Dana X. Bible, Paul Brown, and Ivan Williamson. Aiken Satisfied Although Aiken is on a year-to year basis at Oregon, he said he is well satisfied on the Eugene eam l>tts. Clark has taken all the initia tive in approaching Aiken for the coaching position, asking him to come to Lincoln immediately after the Cotton Bowl game. An Associated Press bulletin from Lincoln Monday revealed that Clark admitted he had talked to Aiken in Dallas last week, prior to the Cotton Bowl game. John Bent ley, Nebraska athletic news direc tor, said they expect to have Aiken in Lincoln for an interview with the university athletic board later this month. Bentley Confident Bentley said he hoped Aiken is interested in the job, and that Ne braska is definitely interested in Aiken. The Nebraska athletic news director revealed he was confident an arrangement could be worked out which would move Frank Za zula and Dick Miller, Aiken’s as sistants, to the Big Six school if Clark and Aiken came to terms. In his statement issued to the Register-Guard Tuesday morning, Aiken gave no indication of any thing more than a casual interest in the Cornhusker offer. “My home is in Eugene and I expect to stay a long time,” he said, "and I want to get home as soon as possible.” “Not a Candidate" "I am not a candidate for the Ne braska job and before I'd do any thing about it 1 would first confer with Dr. Harry Newburn in Eu gene,” Aiken added. Oregon officials were not avail able for comment last night. Presi dent Newburn had said earlier that he knew nothing further about Ai ken’s offer, and that the Oregon coach had not contacted him. Salary Question Mark Little is known about the finan cial side of the matter, except that Nebraska is vitally interested in securing a “name” football coach and will probably offer a lucrative salary. BH» ltooKK Vvil-KV, 6-foot, 8-inch center on jin,.. j basket bull team, was held scoreless In the first half of last night’s ND cage opener with Idaho, but collected eight points in the second period to help his mates to a narrow 50-48 victory over the 'Vandals. Dan Garza Ruled Ineligible for 1949 Oregon's gridiron hopes for 1949, wliiich already got off to a rather wretched start in the re cent Cotton Bowl disappointer, continued to plummet downward with the announcement last night by PCX' Officials that big Danny Garza, All-Coast end the past season, would be ineligible for further eompetion. The Oregon AVebfoots claimed the win only after overcom-. ing a 22-16 lead held by the Idaho Vandals at halftime. Don Peterson, a one-man tornado, put the Ducks out in ^ front in the opening minutes of the second half, and the whole Oree-on team sparked to stay there. Peterson, a sophomore guard, crammed in 9 points in the first five minutes of the second half and added four more in the next three minutes. The youngster shot only six times during the evening and hit each one. Peterson got some assistance from his mates and Oregon ran up a 37-30 lead with 10 minutes still to play. The teams matched baskets un til Idaho forwards Bob Pritchett and Dexter Linck combined to close the gap at 40-38. Big Roger Wiley, 6-foot, 8-inch Oregon center, hit the net to move Oregon away again and Guard Preston Brimhall countered for Idaho to keep the race tight. The Vandals drew within two points in the last minute on a bucket by Guard Joe Grove, but couldn’t get their hands on the ball long enough for a shot after that.
