McCown Gets Appointment As Professor of Religion Dr. Chester C. McCown, a spe ;1alist in Near Eastern archeol ogy and Professor of New Testa pent literature, has been appointed visiting professor of religion at the University of Oregon for the win ter term, 1949. During the winter term, Dr. Mc Cown will teach two classes, one, ft 212 Bible and Civilization and the other, R 462 Judaism and Christianity. Dr. McCown will also give a series of illustrated lectures in the University Lectures Series on Our Debt to the Near East. Ph.D. at Chicago * He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago in 1914 and from then until 1947 he has taught as Professor of New Testament and Oriental Studies at the Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, California. Since 1936 Dr. McCown has been a director of the Palestinian Archeological In stitute at Jerusalem, and joint di rector at the Yale university American School Research Expe dition in Palestine at Jerash, 1930 1931. Two of his most prominent books are: “Ladder of Progress in Pales tine” and “The Search for the Real Jesus.” He has also written a book dealing with the Tel en-Nasbeh Ex cavations. List of Organizations Doctor McCown is a member of the American Council of Learned Societies, the International Con gress of Orientalists at Rome, Italy, the Society of Biblical Liter ature and Exegesis, and the Amer ican Philosophical association. He is also a member of the American Oriental society, the Pal estine Oriental society, and the Ar cheological Institute of American Palestine Exploration Fund. As an honorary vice-president of the Ar cheological Institute of America, Dr. McCown is interested in stimu lating interest in archaeology with the possibility of developing a Chap ter in Eugene. Because Dr. McCown has spent many years in Palestine, he is well informed about present-day condi tions, especially with reference to the current Jewish-Arab conflict. YW Secretary Arrives Sn Eugene Regional YW secretary Paul E. Keiser will arrive in Eugene today to confer with various YW7 groups. Keiser will address the advisory council at a luncheon meeting in the faculty club today. Tomorrow he will speak before the student executive council at noon in the YW. Wednesday evening he. will conclude his activities by appearing before thc-»Freshman club at their Thanksgiving party.
