in the face of the poor physical
properties in use at present.
Blit a ray of sunshine is begin
ning; to break through the over
east. Far-sighteil University of
ficials, realizing the need for
men and women who see the full
potentialities of radio as a me
dium of communication, have al
ready set in motion plans for
achieving this goal.
Asa result a new and improved
physical plant is in the process of
construction. All that hammering
and banging over at Villard hall
is the outward sign of the better
things to come. When the last
nail has been driven and the last
scaffold taken down old Villard
will be ready to assume new re
sponsibilities. Old grads visiting
the campus will still point with
pride to that rough exterior,
probably little realizing the
changes that have taken place
inside.
Studios constructed as individ
ual islands and mounted on thick
cork buffers will reduce noise and
vibrations during broadcasting.
Fully equipped engineering
booths will house vigilant tech
nicians. Practice rooms for run
ning through script material will
be available. These and many
other refinements will heelp
smooth the rough edges off stu
dent productions.
All these things are still in the
future, but in the foreseeable fu
ture. Before too long scenes like
this will be a frequent occurrence:
The producer points to an an
nouncer as the flickering indica
tor changes from “Stand By” to
“On the Air.” A deep resonant
voice proclaims, “The University
of Oregon presents—” and better
radio will be on the way. Not only
for the University, but for the
country at large. For qualified
personnel will mean the differ
ence between good radio and bad.
The possibilities of radio re
main practically untapped. If
more such plans are put into ef
fect they will not long remain so.
Police drove pickets away from
the entrance to the New York
Stock Exchange, thus teaching
them not to trifle with the money
changers.
