(Red) Rolfe, former New York Yankee third base star, came back to the major league yesterday as the new manager of the Detroit Tigers. In a surprise move, Rolfe was promoted from the Detroit farm system in an effort to boost the fal tering' Tigers back into baseball’s limelight. He has headed the farm system for the past year. 'Civil War' Banners Up Michigan Leads Notre Dame Irish In AP Grid Poll NEW YORK, Nov. 16—(AP) — Michigan’s mighty Wolverines con tinued to lead the nation’s football teams in the weekly Associated Press poll of sports writers yester day, bettering their first place mar gin of last week considerably. Trailing Notre Dame by three first place ballots in the previous poll, the Big Nine champions gob bled up 130 of the 208 top spots. The other 78 No. 1 picks were divided among nine teams, with Notre Dame on 27 first place ballots. In point scoring, the determin ing factor, Michigan received 1,952 to 1,721 for the Fighting Irish. No. doubt, last Saturday’s results in fluenced a lot of voters. The Wol verines trampled Indiana under a 54-0 score while Notre Dame bare ly squeezed out a 12-7 triumph ov er Northwestern. Cal Nudged Although they received only three first place votes to 16 for Cal ifornia, Army’s Cadets took third place over the Golden Bears, 1,426 to 1,288. North Carolina, by virtue of its 49-20 romp over Maryland, moved up a peg into fifth place with 1,034 points as 11 voters tabbed the Tar Heels as their no. 1 team. Despite its 47-0 massacre of Temple, Penn State dropped down a notch to six th place with 883 points and three first place ballots. Wildcats Advance Northwestern, on its great show ing against Notre Dame, moved up a notch into seventh place by a com fortable margin over Oklahoma's Sooners, who also advanced a peg from ninth to eight place. The Sooners pulled five first place votes. Clemson, one of the five major unbeaten elevens, climbed into nin th place on the strength of its 21-14 victory over Wake Forest. The Tigers from South Carolina attract ed nine top berths, and missed beat ing out Oklahoma for eighth by a mere five points. Southern Meth odist, a last second, 14-12 winner over Arkansas last Saturday, drop ped three places but managed to finish in the top ten. Ducks 13th Only twe other teams received first place mention. They were Georgia and Michigan State who finished 11th and 12th respectively. Each gained two no. 1 votes. Ore gon finished in 13th place with 187 points. Duck Coach Jim Aiken sent his boys through a short and muddy practice session yesterday after noon, and this week's workouts are expected to remain on the light side. The league-leading Webfoots will be riding the crest of a six-game win streak into Saturday’s game, after their 11th straight conference vic tory. If the Ducks whip OSC, it will be their first unbeaten and un tied conference season since 1895. Both Teams Set With no injuries suffered against UCLA, Trainer Tom Hughes ex pects to have the Webfoots in good physical condition for the Aggie contest. The Beavers came through their game with Utah in good shape, and will also be at full strength. Rival coaches will concentrate on grooming their offensive and de fensive machines this week. Ali through the skirmish could be high scoring, a wet field may bog down both teams. Ducks Favored By comparative scores and sea son’s records, the Ducks will take the favorite roll. Stiner’s Orange men are resigned to underdog stat us, ready to pull a major upset and eliminate Oregon from the Rose Bowl picture. Both Oregon and California must win their games this Saturday to tie for the PCC title. The Rose Bowl team will then be decided by a faculty representative vote. Cal plays Stanford in another tradition al battle at Berkeley. Duck Quarterback Norm Van Brocklin, the powerful unit of run ning backs, and a sturdy Webfoot forward line is expected to hand Oregon a slight edge.
