Mann to Address UO Audience Tomorrow in Igloo on Occupation Born in a literary environment, Erika Mann, who speaks in McAr thur court at 7:30 Thursday on ‘Occupation, Trial and Error”, soon became a notable author in her own , right. Her father, Thomas Mann, won the Nobel prize in 1929 for his ’ writings. “The Magic Mountain” and “The Coming Victory of De mocracy” were among his crea tions. Soon after her family’s voluntary exile from Germany, Miss Mann be gan a career which has been bril 'Atomic Energy' Discuss Topic Dr. E. S. Wengert, head of the -political science department, and ft. T. Ellickson, associate dean, graduate school, and professor in the physics department, will lead a discussion on “Atomic Energy, Its Physics and Politics,” at a din ner meeting of the Social Science club on Monday, November 15, at 6:15 p.m. at the Faculty club. From a political point of view, Dr. Wengert will discuss control of atomic energy within the U. S. Under the Atomic Energy Act of 1946, and the program of control by the federal government which has resulted, atomic energy is a monopoly in the U. S., Dr. Wengert pointed out. Dr. Ellickson will discuss atomic energy from the physicist’s point of view. Such questions as, “Does the physicist want to work for the federal government? and what does the physicist think of govern ment monopoly of atomic energy? will be presented by Dr. Ellickson. AOPi- Pledges One As fall term open rushing closed this week, one more pledge, Wilrae Widness of Portland, was added to the class of Alpha Omricon Pi. liantly successful in all of its varied phases. She traveled widely in Europe, both before and after the war. She is the author of “School for Barbarians” and “The Lights Go Down”, and cooperated with her brother, Klaus Mann, in writing “Escape to Life” and “The Other Germany”. She studied as a girl, under Max Reinhardt, the famous playwright, and her own play, “Peppermill”, a satirical revue, met with extensive approval. During the war, she won distinction as a foreign correspond ent and radio news analyst, writ ing for American and British mag azines and newspapers, and making frequent broadcasts for BBC. In the spring and summer of 1947, Erika Mann toured Europe, inves tigating postwar conditions and as sisting in the prosecution of the Nurenberg trials. She is currently engaged in a lecture tour- of the United States. Law Fraternity Holds Condave “The Lawyer’s Pla:e in Modern Society” was the tl eme of the speech given by Atl orney Calvin Souther at the fall conclave of the Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity, in Portland Saturday. Twenty active members of the organization were present at the meeting, which was sponsored by the alumni. James Bedingfield, junior in the l*w school and chap ter historian, reported on their cur rent activities. President (Justice) Ralph W. Johnson of the Oregon chapter thanked the speakers and intro duced the chapter members. A re ception, dinner, and a business meeting were also part of the pro gram.
