Ducks Off for Seattle Today Washington 'll' Slated Saturday Although Tuesday’s contact scrimmage was the final “with pads” workout scheduled for the Oregon Webfoots this week, Coach Jim Aiken continued drills for the Washington game this Saturday in Seattle. Working out on a muddy prac tice field yesterday afternoon, the Ducks might have been getting a sample of what to expect this weekend in the Puget Sound city. Yesterday’s practice was the final pre-game home workout, since the Seattle-bound footballers leave Eugene by train tonight at 5:35. The Webfoots are scheduled to arrive in Seattle at 7 a.m. Fri day, and Will hold a short practice that afternoon. “Bugs” Stressed Practice this week has been in tended to eliminate bugs in the Lemon and Green offense and de fense which almost lost the St. Mary's game. Duck linemen have been receiving special attention, and line play is expected to im prove this Saturday. .Oregon backs have been running well in practice, and Quarterback Norm Van Brocklin has been pass ing effectively despite a slippery ball. DeWayne Johnson has been playing in the offensive fullback spot this week, and may do the same against Washington. Seven Carry Load Both Keith DeCourcey and Jim Aiken have been showing in prac tice, and will probably see plenty of action against the Huskies. Johnny McKay and Woodley Lewis have been dividing left halfback play, while George Bell and De Courcey are running at right half. Seven running backs, McKay, Lewis, and Aiken at left half, Bell and DeCourcey at right half, and Sanders and Johnson at fullback, are likely to head Oregon’s ground attack. Out for Upset Although the Seattle club has won only one conference game this .season, they are a capable team looking for an upset. Washington Quarterback Anse McCullough is the fifth-ranking passer in the conference, with 30 completions in 67 attempts, and Coach Howie Odell has a flock of sticky-fingered receivers to gather in McCullough's tosses. Brooks Biddle, Marsh Dallas, Cordy Hungar, Larry Hatch, and Roland Kirkby head the list of Husky running backs. Hatch is the leading pass-defender in the PCC, with five interceptions to his credit. Verducci, Cravath [Don't Agree on Top Conference Team Which coach is right? Joe Ver ducci, after his St. Mary’s team was narrowly nipped by Oregon last Saturday, picked California’s -Golden Bears as the better of the , two teams, both unbeaten in PCC • action. But on the other side of the pic ture is USC Coach Jeff Cravath, , who doesn't make such a blunt statement, but seems to lean towards the Webfoots. Cravath, whose Trojans have been beaten by both the Rose Bowl contenders, stated that he would take the team .“with the best passer, in a given game, that is.” California was last in the Rose , Bowl in 1938 when they beat Ala ,bama. He Plugs Husky Hole VERSATILE ALF HEMSTAD, 183-pound senior is slated to start at right guard for the Washington Huskies when they meet Jim Aiken’s Webfoots in Seattle Saturday. Hemstad has played tackle, end and quarterback besides his customary guard spot, where he was all coast in 1945. Ducklings Prepare for Rook Battle Saturday Coach Bill Bowerman sent his Ducklings through another rugged scrimmage in preparation for Sat urday’s game with the highly touted and favored Oregon State Rooks. The little Beavers have already downed the Frosh once, by a whop ping 32-14 margin, but Bowerman believes his boys will be ready for revenge in the second meeting. The game, which will be the only home game for the Yearlings this season, starts at 2:00 Saturday af ternoon at Hayward field and should be interesting. The Rooks have the biggest line on the coast, averaging 219 ppunds per man, and they boast of a good backfield to go with it. Rook stars include fullback Sam Webfoots Still 2nd in Attack The Oregon Webfoots continue to hold down second place in to tal defense and rushing, according to statistics released this week by the Pacific Coast conference com missioners’ office. In the 1920 Rose Bowl, which Harvard won 7-6 over Oregon, the Webfoot points came on two field goals. F Jensen Still Paces PCC In Total Offense, Rushing Jackie Jensen, California’s all America-bound fullback, had a big week end: at the expense of the Southern California Trojans. This enabled him to retain his position as the No. 1 Pacific Coast Confer ence back in total offense and rush ing.
