Journalism Officials Ready For Conference Registration for the Oregon high school press conference this year reached a total of 180 stud ent delegates yesterday after noon, an increase Of 27over last year’s 142. The total num ber of advisers planning to at tend the meet is 30. By CLARA BELLE ROTH (Emerald Staff Reporter) University of Oregon officials, journalism school professors and assistants, editors and publishers of various Oregon newspapers and heads of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers association will be the main speakers at the Oregon High School Press conference to be held November 5 and 6. Laurence R. Campbell, professor of journalism, is in charge of the program. President Harry H. Newburn will extend greetings from the Univer sity to the estimated 200 delegates, and Dean Clifford F. Weigle of the school of journalism will represent that department, Friday morning, November 5 at 10 o’clock at John son hall. Webb First Speaker Wendell Webb, managing editor of the Oregon Statesman, Salem, will be the featured speaker of this opening convocation. He will speak on’the topic, “Making Good in Journalism.” Dr. R. C. McCall, speech depart ment head, will be the main speak er at the conference banquet which will be held at the Osburn hotel that evening at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Lau rence R. Campbell, professor of journalism, will be toastmaster, and musical numbers will be fur nished by the school of music. Joint Meetings There will be five different se ries of advisers’ and students’ meetings during the two days of the convention. Students’ jneetings will include talks by Mrs. Josephine Moore, University news bureau manager on planning school news beats; Lyle N. Nelson, director of infor mation at the University on re porting and editing sports news; Kirk Braun, assistant in photog raphy on photography for year books and newspapers; Professor Carl C. Webb, field secretary of the Oregon Newspaper PuWishers association on effective business policies; Dr. R. D. Millican, assist ant professor of advertising on promoting and selling advertise ments. . Gordon A. Sabine, assistant pro fessor of journalism, on how to take reliable student opinion polls; Warren C. Price, associate profes sor of journalism, on improving newspaper makeup and opportuni ties in p rofessional journalism; sor of journalism, on improv newspaper makeup and op-por tunities. in professional jour nalism; Dale Cooley of Cooley Advertising agency on better advertising copy and layout; Albert Curry, Eugene Register Guard reporter, on newspaper ed iting and headlines; Dr. Laurence R. Campbell, on overhauling edi torials and features. Advisers meeting will feature talks by Gordon A. Sabine, assist ant professor of journalism on “Oregon’s Part in Electing Presi dents,” Dr. Laurence R. Campbell on journalism clubs and courses, publication editorial problems and publication business problems; and Dean Lobaugh, assistant superin tendent of schools in Eugene, on adviser’s relations with adminis tration and staff. A student luncheon will be held Friday noon at John Straub, and an advisers’ luncheon will be held at the Faculty club at the same time. The closing meeting of the con ference will be held on Saturday morning, November 6 at 11. “The Future of Journalism” will be dis cussed by Frank Jenkins, publisher of the Herald and News, Klamath Falls, and president of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers association and Dean Clifford F. Weigle will dismiss the conference. The formal pledging will be held some time next week, according to Joan Abbett, president. Housemothers to Meet There will be a meeting for all housemothers Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Gerlinger hall and one for all house presidents the same after noon at 4 in Gerlinger hall.
