    Rain May Hamper
Gridiron Strategy
In Duck-Gael Tilt
W ith every weather prediction pointing toward a soggy
turf this weekend, the Oregon Ducks may have to live up tc
their nickname in Saturdy's game with the St. Mary’s Gaels at
Hayward field.
Jim Aiken took advantage of a wet afternoon yesterday,
drilling his team with a slippery ball. Twenty-point favorites
•to win, the Webfoots have probably saved something for the
rainy day that's in the offing.
The Oregon squad, on top of Pacific Coast Conference
.standings, will ue alter a 111m con
ference victory, while the Saints
are still looking for win number
three of the season.
Wet Ball in Offing
If Oregon rain does descend upon
Hayward field Saturday, Aiken
may change his offensive tactics. A
wet ball would probably cut down
Norm Van Brocklin’s passing ef
ficiency, but the Hayward turf is
firm enough to offer fair footing
for swift halfbakcs.
The terrific trio — George Bell,
Johnny McKay, and Woodley Lew
is-should run up plenty of Oregon
yardage, while Van Brocklin and
Bob Sanders are doing their parts
at quarter and fullback.
Gaels Out For Upset
Gael Coach Joe Verducci has a
few halfbacks of his own, and many
believe that Spike Cordeiro and
mates are out for a major upset.
Aiken hasn’t been overlooking
this possibility, since this week’s
Duck drills have stressed the de
fense. The Gaels have a good pass
er in Dick Jarvis, and some fast
ends and halfbacks to receive his
aerials.
No major changes in the Oregon
lineup are likely for the St. Mary’s
game. Even though McKay is ready
for full duty, Lewis will probably
start at left half. Bell at right
half, Sanders at fullback, and Van
Brocklin at quarterback completes
the Duck offensive backfield.
basl Home Game
The starting Oregon forward
wall will be the same, with only the
customary offensive and defensive
substitutions.

Hold Scrimmage
Scrimmage was the order of the
day for varsity basketball aspi
rants at McArthur court yester
day, with John Warren sending his
squad through rugged action.
Stars of the afternoon were Bob
Don and transfer Paul Sowers in
the point-making department and
veteran Roger Wiley under the
boards. Don, a 6-foot, 5-inch let
terman, and Sowers, a junior from
Vanport, were hitting consistently.
Sowers, Don Hot
In the first scrimmage of the af
ternoon, Don, Sowers, Wiley, Bob
Lavey and Kenny Seeborg downed
Paul Cooper, Lynn Hamilton, Jer
ry Switzer, Johnny Neeley and
Dick Unis 18-4.
The same five won the second
scrimmage, but only 8-4, facing a
stubborn defense from Jim Bocchi
Rod Slade, Bob Amacher, Leroy
Coleman and Don Peterson.
Hamilton, Cooper and crew came
back to beat Jack Keller, Dale
Warburg, Will Urban, Rogei
Mockford and Art Milne 8-6.
Lynn Hamilton and Johnny Nee
ley both dropped in four points af
the winners of the third scrimmage
won again, 10-S.
In the final session, Keller lec
his mates to a 12-8 victory by scor
ing six points against Bob Charl
ton, Darrell Hawes, Gordon Wilson,
Dan Cudahy and Eddie Artzt.
He Meets a Bell of St. Mary's
FOK WHOM THE BELL TOLLS—That will be a pretty important question this Saturday, when Ore
gon collides with St. Mary’s, because George Bell will be out there trying to toll for the Webfoots,
and another Bell will be doing the same thing for the Gaels. Just what team gets the benefit of their
efforts may have a bearing on the final outcome. ^ i *5'*•: . • \ *•« SM

Odell Says Huskies
Need Touchdowns
SEATTLE, Oct. 28 — (AP) —
Head Coach Howie Odell, who
made his first trip of the season to
the University of Washington
practice field yesterday, observed
i today:
“There’s nothing wrong with the
Huskies that a few touchdowns
would not cure.”
“I never saw any better spirit
in practice, nor is there any lack
of willingness on the part of the
players,” Odell said.
“All the team needs is to break
out with some touchdowns to prove
to itself it has the scoring punch.
I hope that outbreak comes about
2:30 p.m. Saturday while the
Washington-Stanford game is go
ing on at Palo Alto.”
