DUCK TRACKS

The job of predicting eight or ten football games each Sat
urday is simple enough compared to the sixty or seventy guesses
the big-time forecasters make weekly, but with games scheduled
like the ones on tap today, it would be difficult to pick even two
or three.
Here we go with our selections, and let the “teams that play
keep our meager. 750 accuracy percentage in mind ....
OREGON vs, USC—For our concern, the only game of
the week will be played this afternoon in Portland’s Multno

today for an Oregon win.

should be a first-rate ball
game.
The men of Troy, for the first
time in a long while, have been
cast in the role of underdogs,
and we'll go right along with
the odds-makers. A determined
USC defense repulsed Rice
touchdown drives all day last
week in winning 7-0. and Ore
gon's Norm Van Brocklin may
be forced to throw some passes
It will be a close game, but we believe the Ducks will stay
in the Rose Bowl sprint by turning in a 7-point victory.
WASHINGTON vs. WSC—There’s a Civil War brewing
up in the Evergreen state, and this grid battle in Pullman should
be one of the best in the PCC. Coach Phil Sarboe’s Cougars are
developing fast, but so are the Huskies from Seattle.
Washington, California Bears Picked to Win
Washington State has won its last two games, from Stanford
and Montana, while Washington will be following up a 27-6
upset of the UCLA Bruins.
Although Husky Coach Howie Odell won't be there to see it,
we think his Huskies will fashion a 13-point win up in Pullman.
OREGON STATE vs. CALIFORNIA—Lon Stiner’s un
subsidized Aggies make another one of those killing down
coast trips from Corvallis to Berkeley to play the big Cali
fornia Bear.
As much as we would like to see the Beavers pull an upset,
it just isn’t in the books. Cal’s stronger and more experienced
line should stop the Orange attack cold, and Golden Bear backs,
led by Jackie Jensen, will run up plenty of yardage.
In its first conference test, California should be in for a win,
with two or three touchdowns to the good.
UCLA Over Indians in a 'Has Been' Contest
UCLA vs. STANFORD—It’s homecoming down on the Bruin
campus, and Bert LaBrucherie’s trodden Uclans should salvage
a win over the Indians.
Both teams have dropped conference games this season,
with the Indians after their first conference win in two years.
We’ll pick the Bruins to beat Stanford by six or seven points,
in a bitterly-contested game.
MONTANA vs. MONTANA STATE—Still another Civil
War, this time over in Butte, Montana. Some figure MSU to
win in an upset, but we'll stick to Montana by seven.
That takes care of the games PCC member team play today,
so we’ll have to throw in a few others from across the nation.
Wolverines, Wildcats Battle in 'Game of Week'
MICHIGAN vs. NORTHWESTERN—This is spotlighted
as game of the week, and should decide the number one Big Nine
team. Even if the Wildcats lose to Michigan, they’ll still go to
the Rose Bowl if they don’t lose any others.
Northwestern has won three tough games this season, and
will be out to whip the favored Wolverines. They may be
able to pull an upset, but it’s doubtful. Benny Oosterbaan’s
Michigans will keep rolling today, with a 7-point win. This
game will be one to listen to.
ST. MARY’S vs. NEVADA—This battle should raise the
roof down San Francisco way, when these tough independent
teams open up against each other. The Wolfpack is still a strong
offensive unit, and PCC teams, fearing an upset, have shunned
them this year.
Nevada by two or three touchdowns, in a real ball game.
Just a few more quick ones to wind things up. Pennsylvania
should win over Columbia, Army over Harvard, Minnesota to
whip Illinois, and Nebraska is picked for a loss to Notre Dame.
That’s it for eleven games, and we’re still looking for a lucky
weekend.

California Bears
Hit OSC Today
BERKELEY, Calif., Oct. 16—
(AP)—After four smashing non
league victories, the powerful Uni
versity of California Bears will
make their opening bid for the Pa
cific Coast Conference football
championship here today against
the Oregon State Beavers.
The important engagement, first
of six league clashes in a row for
California, is expected to attract a
crowd of 35,000.
California Favored
Although Oregon State’s win
ning streak over the Bears extends
back to 1938, the team from the
North will line up as the underdog
tomorrow. California, now rated
sixth in the national poll, has been
established the favorite to win by
21 points.
Oregon State will gamble largely
on a sharp passing attack in its at
tempt to maintain the victory
string over California.
Samuel on Optional
Don Samuel, southpaw thrower
operating at right half, is expected
to trouble the Bears. The visitors
make good use of optional pass-run
plays.
California’s running game is the
strongest part of its attack. Jackie
Jensen, fullback, and Jack Swaner,
right half, have packed most of the
punch for the Bears this season.
California will hold a slight
weight advantage in the line, with
OSC presenting a heavier back
field. The game will be broadcast
over 27 far west stations.
