Duck-Trojan Clash Today
Warren
Says Unity
Necessity
uniy a united American people
can successfully tackle the “job
ahead,” G.O.P. vice-presidential
candidate Earl Warren told 3000
listeners in McArthur court yester
day.
Choosing the party best able to
achieve this unity is the main is
sue in the present campaign, he
said.
The Republican party alone, he
continued, offers the “best hope of
real leadership” and “the greatest
•ability for coming to grips with
the problems confronting us.”
Hits Wallace
The Wallacites “strange align
ment with communists in this coun
try and their open aid and com
fort to Soviet Russia” disqualifies
them as contenders for serious con
sideration, he said.
Warren can see “no hope” in the
Dixiecrat party with its entirely
sectional cause. It is significant
“only in that it is further proof of
internal squabbling within the
ranks of the present administra
tion,” he observed.
Democrats Split
“We can hardly look to what is
left of the present administration
because it has been unable to
maintain leadership even within
its own ranks,” Warren said. He
cited the failure of the 79th Dem
ocratic congress to put through a
legislative program and the bolt
ing Democrats in the 80th con
gress who voted with the Repub
licans on such issues as the Taft
Hartley act, as examples of the ad
ministration’s internal split.
“It must be obvious to most
Americans that under such cir
cumstances the national adminis
tration is in no position either to
come up with answers to our prob
lems or put them through if the
answers are found,” he added.
Bitterness Absent
Calling attention to President
Truman’s “namecalling”, Warren
said, “On our side there is no bit
terness in the campaign. We do
not blame the administration for
all the ills of our country.”
“Neither party,” he pointed out,
“has any copyright on American
principles, any patent on progress,
or any proprietary interest in the
advances we have made to date.”
■The California governor believes
that America nas grown great un
der the two party system and must
continue to avoid the multi party
system that “is blocking progress
in so many European countries.”
United Party
Emphasizing the unity of the Re
publican party under «om Dewey,
Warren repeated the G.O.P.’s plat
form promises, one “really” bi
partisan foreign policy, an efficient
and humane national administra
tion, and development of natural
resources and the West.
“We united on a platform and
we united on a standard bearer.

Webfoots Favored
To Win Third Game
From Southern Cal
'J wo high-powered football machines, both strong contend
ers for the Pacific Coast Conference Rose Bowl nomination,
will swing into action today at 2 p. m. in Portland's Multnomah
Stadium, when the University of Oregon Webfoots meet the
mighty Trojans from Southern California.
duck Coach Jim Aiken will send his Oregon team into this
conference game as 6-point favorites to defeat USC. This is the
first time in recent years that Oregon has been favored over the
Trojans.
'1'he two teams have played 14 football games, the Trojans
winning 11 and Oregon only two. The 1939 game ended in a 7-7
tie. Oregon last fashioned a win in 1941, when USC was defeated
20-6. Total points scored favor the Trojans 366 to 82.

Even though the weatherman
says the skies will be clear for
today’s Oregon-USC football
game in Multnomah Stadium,
Nancy Bostwiek isn’t taking any
chances on getting rained on.
The 30,000 fans expected to fill
the stadium today will probably
take the same precaution. The
crowd scene above was taken at
last year’s Oregon-Washington
game. Webfoot Tackle Sam
Nevills (at right) will see ac
tion on defense against the Tro
jans, and looks like he’s ready to
give them plenty of trouble. This
game is expected to answer
many questions about the 1948
PCC Rose Bowl nomination. Ore
gon will go into the contest as a
6-point favorite.

Cravath
use COACH JEFF CRAVATH
has been in the football business
since 1929, when he headed the
football team at Denver univer
sity. He went to Southern Cal in
1933 as frosh coach, moving in as
varsity mentor in 1942. Cra
vath’s SC record stands at 41
won, 17 lost, and four tied. Cra
vath-coached Trojan varsity
teams have scored 1133 points,
to 629 for the opposition, win
ning the PCC title four times.
UO Teams Take
SC in 1915,1915
The first Oregon-USC football
game was played in 1915 with the
Webfoots winning 35-0. From that
year until 1941, when Oregon won
20-6, the Trojans have managed
to take every contest. USC’s 53-0
margin in 1931 is the largest score
made by either team.
The two schools have played 14
games, with Oregon winning two
ind Southern Cal 11. The 1939 con
test resulted in a 7-7 tie.

Aiken
—I.——————
JIM AIKEN’S Oregon football
teams have won 10 and lost 4
since his first year as Duck Grid
boss. He started coaching college
ball in 1936 at Akron university,
going to Nevada in 1939. After
eight years with the Wolfpack,
Aiken came to Oregon in time
for the 1947 season. His college
teams have won 66 games, lost
36, and tied four, while his total
coaching record, including high
school teams, stands at 184 won,
51 lost, and six tied.
Ducks After Revenge
The Webfoots will be out to end
USC domination this afternoon.
Jeff Cravath’s men have 40-0 and
43-0 wins on the records in 1942
and 1946, and revenge will be Ore
gon's first objective.
The starting lineup Aiken plans
to use against USC won’t be known
until game time. Injuries to John
ny McKay and George Bell in the
Idaho game marks these two first
string backs as unlikely, but they
may start.
Lewis May Start
Woodley Lewis could be Aiken’s
choice at the vital lefthalf spot,
and Keith DeCourcey and De
Wayne Johnson will be ready to
relieve Bell at right halfback.
Blasting Bob Sanders is a sure
starter at fullback in the Duck T
formation.
If a strong Trojan line stops
Oregon’s ground attack, Duck
Quarterback Norm Van Brocklin
will have to rely on his valuable
right arm for a victory. Leading
passer in the PCC, Van Brocklin
W111 have Ends Dan Garza and’ Dick
Wilkins on the receiving end of his
tosses.
Same Season Record
Each team has a 3-1 won and
lost record going into today’s game.
The Webfoots have defeated Santa
Barbara, Stanford, and Idaho
whiie USC has beaten Utah, Ore
gon State, and Rice.
Big Nine football teams ac
counted for both defeats. Oregon
lost a 14-0 test to the Michigan
Wolverines, while the Trojans were
defeated by Ohio State, 21-0.
After winning nine of their last
ten ball games, the Webfoots are
working on another win streak.
Both teams won games last Sat
urday, Oregon slipping by Idaho
15-8, and USC beating Rice 7-0.
Strong SC Pass Defense
Although favored to win today,
Aiken’s crew will be up against the
strongest pass defense in the PCC.
Jeff Cravath’s unit has limited the
opposition to a scant 83.8 yards
per-game through the air. On the
ground, the Trojans rank fifth in
rushing defense.
In offensive statistics, the Ducks
have an edge over SC. Oregon
ranks third in total offense, with
