Waiting for a Trojan Stockv Ed CHROROT, Oregon right guard, will l>e Jim Aiken’s starting lineup when tie e meet the USC Trojans Saturday at Multnomah stadium in Portland. The 200-pound veteran, a 194, letterman, plays equally well on offense and defease. -Sports Side Grid Guesses By LARRY LAD October 16 comes as a week of decision for the Grid Guess col umn. Wo think we've devised a system that will boost this col umn's .709 season average and there's no time like Saturday to try it out. Some of these may look a bit zany but until the results are all in, we'll argue for them whole heartedly. Game of the week will be played at Ann Arbor when Northwestern journeys up from Evanston, Illi nois to clash with the mighty Mich igan Wolverines. Michigan is a 7 point favorite with the gamblers. Northwestern has had three very tough games oii( consecutive Sat urdays while Michigan has been brought along a bit more slowly. Both teams beat Purdue, North western by 21 points, Michigan by do. Northwestern played a bruising game with Minnesota last week while the Wolverines were having a picnic with the Boilermakers. We're hoping the Wildcats haven’t too many injuries because we're tabbing them to upset Michigan by <5 points. Ducks by 14 On the Pacific coast, all eyes will be on Portland's Multnomah sta dium where Oregon tangles with the Trojans of Southern California. A Webfoot win might well set them up for a clean sweep of their remaining games and a shoo-in to the Rose Bowl. A Trojan win may well toss the Bowl bid to the up surging Bears of California. Southern Cal had as bad a time with Rice last week as the Ducks did with Idaho. The Trojans were “up" for that game; the Ducks were “down." If the breaks go against Oregon we think it could be a tie ballgame. If the Webfoots get the breaks they’ve got coming we feel safe in tabbing the Ducks for a 14-point win. Columbia In Upset On the east coast, the “big” game is between Pennsylvania and Columbia. Penn has a tough, fast eleven that has thus far dispatched Dartmouth and Princeton with lit tle or no trouble. Columbia has wins over Rutgers and Yale but lost 24-33 to Harvard. Lou Little is no man to fool with and so, for the upset of the East, Columbia by C points. In the Southeastern conference, Dixie eyes will roll towards Knox ville where Tennessee entertains the Crimson Tide of Alabama. Ala bama has looked much more im pressive to date, but it's Home coming for the Vols. On a hunch, Tennessee to upset, by 6 points. Minnesota, Irish Back around the nation at a lit tle faster clip, we'll pick Arkansas to upset Texas by 6 points, Minne sota to flatten Illinois by 14, In diana to edge Ohio State by 6, Purdue to beat Iowa 10 points, Wisconsin to trip Yale by 14, No tre Dame to crush Nebraska by 27 points, and Pitt to post a 14-point win over Marquette. In the East we predict that Army will nip Harvard by 6 points, Holy Cross to take a 6-point thrill er from Brown, Dartmouth to blast Colgate by 14, Cornell to crush Syracuse by 20, Missouri to work hard for a 7 point win over Navy, Penn State to swamp W. Virginia (Please turn to page seven) Weather Man Says 'No Rain' for Game PORTLAND, ORE., Oct. 15— (AP)—The weather man today forecast a dry field for the South ern California-Oregon football game here Saturday. He said some high cloudiness but no rain was in prospect. Southern California meanwhile was cast in the unaccustomed role of underdog in some quarters. Some odds-makers rated the af fair even, but others made Oregon six-point favorite. Southern California will arrive tomorrow by air to work out on Multnomah Stadium, where the game will be played. Although there may be a shake up in the Webfoot offensive back field against Southern Cal, both Johnny McKay and George Bell, slightly injured against Idaho, will be ready for duty. Boost in Offense Keith DeCourcey, second right halfback, and DeWayne Johnson, r e g u 1 a r defensive line-backer, have been working out in ball carrying rolls this week, and may see offensive action. Final Oregon workout before the Portland invasion is scheduled this afternoon, and will be closed to spectators, following Aiken’s re cent practice policy. Duck Leave Saturday The Oregon squad will not en train for Portland until early Sat urday, and are scheduled to arrive in the Hose City at 11:30 in the morning. Both teams have only one de feat on the records so far this season, both in intersectional games. The Ducks lost a 14-0 de cision to the University of Michi gan, while USC was beaten by the Ohio State Buckeyes, 21-0. Game a Rose Bowl ‘Key’ Coach Jeff Cravath’s Trojans have played only one conference contest so far, that being a 21-6 win over the OSC Beavers. Ore- - gon has won two conference games, over Stanford and Idaho. A win for either team Satur day would he an important step toward the Rose Bowl nomination, and a defeat would mean almost - certain elimination from title com tention. Reports from Trojan headquar ters indicate the USC squad will be at full strength for the Oregon game. SC defeated a tough Rice team last Saturday, and will be out to veto Duck bowl chances with a victory. In past years, USC has won 11 games from Oregon, the Ducks have beaten the Trojans only twice, and one game ended in a tie. To win a reputation as a prophet, one has only to predict trouble.
