Grid Guesses
By LARRY LAU
Predictions come a little easier
now as past performance, statistics
and scores are weighed and jug
gled to give the grid seer a better
indication of Saturday’s scores.
Tn the Eastern conference game
of the week is the Cornell-Hat vard
tilt. Harvard is favored because of
their impressive win over Colum
bia last week, but we think the
Cornell eleven has had tougher
competition. Cornell by 7 . . . Rut
gers looks 20 points better chan
'1'emple and ditto for Penn State
over Syracuse . . . We'll take
Brown over Rhode Island by 20,
Colgate over Boston U. by 21, and
Columbia to trip Yale by one TD.
Also, it looks like Dartmouth
over Holy Cross by 7 in a close
contest, Penn over Princeton by
14, and the much walloped Pitt to
upset a favored West Virginia elev
en, by 7 points.
Navy Over Duke
In the Southern conference
game of the week is the Duke
Navy brawl. Duke is favored, but
we think the Middies have learned
plenty from their past two lick
ings. Navy by 7. We'll take Miss.
State over Clemson by 14. North
Carolina over Wake Forest by 14,
and Tulane to edge the stubborn
gamecocks of South Carolina by 7.
In the Southeastern conference
attention will be on the tight Mis
sissipi - Vanderbilt contest. It’s a
coin flipper, but the home field is
worth the nod. Mississippi by 6 . . .
We’ll string along with Georgia to
beat Kentucky by 13 points, and
LSU to bump the Texas A & M
aggies by 12 points.
SMU Favored
In the Southwest conference the
roughest game will be between Ar
kansas and Baylor. Both squads
have a mediocre offense and an
iron defense. It's the Razorbacks
field, so Arkansas by 7 . . . South
ern Methodist entertains the Ti
gers from Missouri and should
send them home on the short end
of a 14-0 score.
Texas and Oklahoma, both bad
| ly beaten in their initial games,
and both winners last week, tan
gle on a neutral field in Dali
The Longhorn look deeper, and
they’re playing in Texas. Texas by
7. Nebraska should wallop Colo
rado by 19 points: ditto for Kansas
over Iowa State.

due and Michigan tangle in what

Tribe 1-3 Favorites

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 7 (AP)—Now
that Cleveland has squared the
count in games, betting commis
sioner James J. Carroll figures
the American leaguers 1 to 3 fa
vorites to win the World Series.
He rates Boston 2</2 to T.
That means the bettor would

Cleveland with $3, and would get

Howell's Squad
Could Tip Ducks
With the Breaks
Although his team will be out
weighed and outmanned’, Coach
Dixie Howell feels that Idaho
can upset the heavily favored Ore
gon Webfoots this Saturday at
Moscow.
The Vandals will average about
10-pounds less per man than the
visitors, but their emphasis will
be on speed and more speed.
Howell has built his line around
two big tackles, Carl Kiilsgaard
and Will Overgaard. Both stand
six feet-three inches and weigh 215,
and are capable of playing 60 min
utes of football.
The only other starter weighing
over 200 pound's for the Vandals
is Fullback Sam Theis at 212, and
he won’t play because of injuries.
Overall team weight for Idaho
will be about 192. The line will
weigh in at 193, with the backfield
averaging 190.
Before the Webfoots left yester
day afternoon, they had a light
workout, going through plays and
doing lots of running. Coach Jim
Aiken plans to have Bob Sanders
and Bud Boqua take over DeWayne
Johnson’s line-backing spot for the
game, if he didn’t join the team in
Salem.
Wet Field Likely
Though the weather bureau has
said there might be good weather
for the game, rain has been falling
in Moscow during the week. Howell
believes this will help the Vandals
by slowing down the Webfoot pass
ing attack.
The Idaho coach has not as yet
announced his starting lineup, but
based on previous games it will
probably be as follows:
Ends, George Smith (175) and
George Ballew (182); tackles, Carl
Kiilsgaard (215) and Will Over
gaard (215); guards, Wilbur Rule
man (195) and Ken McCormack
(192); center, Tom Ambrose (180);
quarterback, Ted Diehl (180); left
half, John Brogan (175); right half,
Jim Hatch (194); and fullback, Jim
Chadband (197).

Over Idaho Saturday;
Vandals Out for Upset
The University of Oregon gridders will be favored to start
another win streak at 2 p. m. tomorrow, when they meet the
Idaho Vandals in a PCC football game at Neale Stadium in
Moscow.
Jim Aiken’s Webfoots arrived in Pullman, Washington, at
9 a. m. today, and will practice this afternoon, using Washing
ton State college facilities. Aiken will take his team to Moscow
shortly before game time Saturday.
Eugene radio station KASH,
1600 key., and KEX in Portland
will carry the game broadcast,
starting at 1:45. Sportcaster Leo
Pierson will do the play-by-play.
Last-Minute Practice
Before leaving for Portland by
bus yesterday, the Ducks ran
through a surprise practice in full
uniform; Aiken is taking no
chances that his team will be off
against Idaho, a squad noted for
its fight and determination.
Coach Dixie Howell has been
working hard with the Vandals,
trying to correct mistakes that lost
the UCLA game. The squad has
been working out in rain, and may
•have the edge if the field is mud
dy. Yesterday was the first day
ail week that the Vandals have
worked out on a dry field.
Vandal Fullback Out
Idaho Fullback Sam Theis, a us
ual starter, will not play tomor
row, because tlie leg injury he re
ceived last week against UCLA has
not responded to treatment.
The Oregon traveling squad is
almost the same unit that made
the Michigan trip. Aiken has sub
stituted Dick Mobley for Les Hag
en, Keith Moore will go in Ken
Maine’s place, and Hal Cuffel will
take Bob Easter's spot.
DeWayne Johnson, who was
called home earlier this week, may
have joined the team in Salem. Bill
Marker went on the trip as John
son’s alternate.
