Job Placement Found By Many '48 Grads A high percentage of the Univer sity’s 900 graduates for the year 1947-48 now have work. Figures from the graduate place ment service show that it placed 328 directly into jobs. Some 300 others were given information and counsel which led to probable em ployment. Of the 300 graduates who did not use this service, many went into teaching and were cleared througn a teacher placement pool in the school of education. Other schools also took care of their own gradu ates. Many students snared their own jobs, leaving the further-edu cationers, vacationers, and students who are homesteading in Alaska. Although the year 1947-48 was only the second year of operation of the graduate placement service, available statistics indicate success ful service. Dean of Personnel K. W. On thank, director of the service, said: “The University undertakes to aid its graduates, and students leaving the campus before gradua tion, in finding employment suit able to their talents and training. We can not guarantee jobs, but we can supply opportunity informa tion, keep a handy reference file, and serve as a go-between for the graduate and employers. Also, we are enlisting alumni as advisers to counsel students as to opportunities in respective fields of work and communities. Dean Onthank pointed out that though the graduate placement ser vice operates chiefly in the business fields, his office cooperates with the deans of the other professional schools in placing graduates. New Duckling Mentor Returns With Brilliant Coaching Record Prospects for a top-notch fresh man football team are looking, up, and one of the main reasons Duck ling stock is on the rise is the new coach, Bill Bowerman. Bowerman returns to his alma mater with one of the outstanding prep coaching records in the sftate. In seven years at Medford high, his team chalked up 64 wins, lost only eight, and had three ties. Bowerman graduated from the University of Oregon in 1935, after starring in both football and track. He coached one year in Portland before taking the head coaching job at Medford. Included in that re markable record were three unde feated seasons and three unofficial state championships. The new Frosh grid coach is also taking over as the head track coach, replacing John Warren. Bowerman picked a lot of track se crets from the late Bill Hayward, when he was attending Oregon and Hayward was coaching track. His track teams at Medford won every Hayward Relay meet they entered, and also picked up three state tracK titles. «. Bowerman is a married man, and the father of three sons.
