Duck Nine Trips Oregon State, 3-2; Washington Staves Off Vandals, 5-3 Idaho Rally fizzles In Cast Inning MOSCOW, Ida., May 17—(UP) Bob Jorgensen, University of Washington hurler, struck out pinch-hitter Don Hunt with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to enable the Huskies to clinch a 5-3 baseball win over the University of Idaho here. With the winning run on base, the strike-out was a heart-breaker to the Vandals who staged a strong rally in the closing inning. Wash ington made all five of its tallies in the first two innings. Jorgensen Goes Koute Jorgensen went the route for the Huskies yielding six hits. However, he walked nine men and had to rely on sharp fielding work by his team mates to keep the game on ice. Heldt Resigns as Fresh Coach Oregon’s freshman football and basketball coach, Carl Heldt, an nounced his resignation from these posts Saturday. Athletic director Leo Harris ac cepted' the resignation, and at the same time commended Heldt for his work with the grid and hoop teams last fall and winter. Heldt came to Oregon in the fall of 1947 from the head football and asistant basketball coaching position at La Porte, Indiana, high school He was the first freshman coach at the University since 1942. Excellent Record He came to Oregon with an ex cellent record as coach and player. As a tackle at Purdue University he earned' three letters, and was captain of the team in his last year When he graduated he was awarded the Big Ten medal for outstanding scholarship and ath letic participation. Heldt played tackle for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the profes sional National league for two seasons and then took his first coaching job in 1937 at Lehigh line coach, and then frosh basket university, where he was assistant line coach for a year. He then re turned to Purdue and was award ed his masters degree in physical education. After three years at Peru, In diana high, where he was head football and track coach, he moved to St. Louis, where he served as ball coach at Washington univer sity. In 1942 he enlisted in the Navy and served until 1946, when he was discharged as Lt. Commander, to take the post at La P'o!{te. Heldt is married. Last fall his frosh gridders won one game, tied one, and lost three. The Duckling hoop team was win ner in 17 of 22 games. Ski Clubbers Meet For Officer Election There will be a meeting of the University of Oregon ski club Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m., in 105 Oregon. All members are requested to be present, because there will be nominations and election of of ficers. Members will also be able to purchase tickets for the smorgas bord dinner for Gretchen Fraser, the only American ever to win an Olympic gold medal. The dinner will be held Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. Beaver Court Team Blanks Racketmen for Second Time By JOHN BARTON Oregon’s tennis team dropped its second match of the year to Oregon State’s netmen Saturday on the Duck courts, 7-0. Nick Reed and Fred Howard won the only set of the day for Oregon in their number two doub les match against the Beavers. Beavers Bill Huestead and Er win Douglas bowed to Reed and Howard 10-8, in the second set of the doubles match. State won the other sets, 6-2 and 6-1. Bowman Number One Only one Oregon man, Bert Bowman, retained his original po sition on the Duck squad', which was changed considerably for the OSC match. Bowman was downed by Hugh Findly of OSC, 6.1 and 6-2, in the number one singles. Dave Van Zandt, who cracked the team for the number two spot, went down to Beaver Jack Carrothers by 6-3 and 6-2 counts. Rick Trommlitz, playing number three for the Aggie match, was de feated 6-4 and 6-4 by Erwin Doug las, and number four man Saal Lesser bowed to Bill Huested 6-2 and 6-3 Duck Newcomer Another newcommer on the Puck ladder, Bud Carpenter, lost two straight to Beaver Wes Bring ham, 6-1 and 6-4, in the number five singles. In the number one doubles match, Lesser and Bowman were beaten by Findlay and Carrothers two straight, 6-4 and 6-0. The second set in the number two doubles match, lone Oregon victory of the day, went the long route, 10-8, before Howard and Reed finally built up the two game edge to win. Next action for the Ducks will be at Pullman, for the Northern division playoffs, starting on Fri day of this week. Going on pre vious play this season, the Ducks should end up in the number four position, with Idaho behind them. The Web foots received an 11% to 6% shel lacking from the Portland Pilots Friday and lost a close 15% to 11% match to OSC in their Northern Di vision finalee. Playing without the services of Lou Stafford and Rod Taylor who were uhable to make the trip, the Ducks tripped up on the Eastmore land course in Portland and lost three out of five matches. With Stafford not playing, Tom Mar lowe, Portland’s ace divoteer, was practically assured a victory and the absence of Rod Taylor hurt. Marlowe defeated Dom Provost 3 to 0 by shooting a two-under-par 70, capturing medalist honors. Beavers Spring Upset But the truly unexpected came when the underdog Beavers clipped the Ducks’ tail feathers. Again the Webfoo'ts were short-handed be cause of an arm infection suffered by Provost, regular second man. Oregon pushed in three runs in the first inning to defeat Ore gon State, 3 to 2, and even their northern division coast con ference series at one game each. All of the scoring was taken care of in the opening inning, as Oregon State tallied its two runs. The Ducks took full advan of walks by Beaver pitcher Fred Siri to win. Johnny Ko venz opened with a hit, Walt Kirsch walked, and Pat Woh lers sacrificed to advance them. Bartle Bats in Pair Dick Bartle then singled to score the first two runs.
