Youngster of Junior Weekend is the float parade. Celebrat
ing its fourth year, the parade will move this afternoon, unlike
its predecessor, the canoe fete, which was always a night affair.
In 1941, the famous fetes were replaced by an all-campus
sing. Then, in 1945, the students decided that trucks could re
place canoes, so the parade moved from the race to Willamette
street.

streamers, flowers, and lights.
That year the parade was called
a canoe carnival, according to
Dean Karl W. Onthank, a member
of that first-fete class.
Each spring the decorations be
came more elaborate until canoes
were finally tied together into
barges for full-sized floats. De
velopment of the art school helped
bring improved canoe fetes.
These improvements made such
beauties as Strauss waltz floats,
Venetian gondolas, Guides of the
Tide, Sea Rover, and the Phantom
Fete in 1928.
Satire in 1939
A satire on Hitler and Mussoli

1939. This one even included dunk

Oregon’s last parade on the
race followed a mock procession
called “Stars Fell on Ali Baba."
The real Arabian Nights fete
moved Saturday night, closing the
weekend.
