In the first game, Oregon head man Barney Koch fed the Portland ers two chuckers, Bob Palmet starting and Lyle Rogers finishing off the sixth anc| seventh innings Each team collected seven hits, and each team likewise went errorless, but Vanport shoved over one tally in the first frame after two were out, and added the winning run in the third. Fullerton’s Bat Murderous The lone Duckling counter was chalked up in the fourth stanza, with shortstop Mel Krause lashing out a clean single behind second base, and going on to score on an other one-bagger by Catcher Ken Bennett, who lined his blow into left field. Third baseman Bob Bonebrake and Keystoner Peewee Welch each bagged two singles in three times at the plate, and Brad Fullerton started off a terrific day behind the willow stick by picking up a one base hit in his only appearance in the batter’s box. Provost Tops Medalists; Stafford Defeats Rival By KEN JOHNSON Coach Sid Milligan’s Oregon golf team partly salved its wounds re ceived in the Husky encounter Friday by defeating the Portland uni versity linksters 12 y2 to 5y2 Saturday in a non-conference match Sat urday. The match was played at the Eugene Country club and was an individual contest. Dom Provost again provided the spark for Oregon, banging out a four-under-par 68 to cop medalist’s honors for the fourth time in five matches. Added to Provost’s 72-hole total from previous matches, the sub-par round makes him 11 under par. An interesting feature of the day was the match between Lou Staf ford of Oregon and Tom Marlow of the Pilots. Marlow was the only man to beat Stafford last year in collegiate play and the close battle between the old link rivals Saturday lived up to expectations. Although Stafford beat his opponent 2-1, the one stroke separating Stafford’s 70 and Marlow’s 71 tells the closeness of the match. A1 Crosbie, formerly first man for the Ducks and now playing fourth, was the only other Oregon golfer to shoot par 72. Other scores were surprisingly high, Rod Taylor’s 78 being most unexpected. Taylor didn’t have the finesse that is usual to him and lost all three of his points. SCORES: Oregon Score Pts. Stafford .(70) 2 vs. Provost. This week’s practice will consist of plenty of scrimmaging, with new men carrying a big share of the duties. The intrasquad game, postponed again last Friday after several previous changes of date, appears now to be questionable. Still on slate is the major, game-condition fray ending the spring session, to be played on Hayward field. Smith said yesterday that his team has two full weeks to prac tice for the OSC match, to be played here. The match is schedul ed for Saturday, May 15. Practice Match Off A practice match with the Ir vington Tennis club of Portland, slated for sometime late this week, has been indefinetely canceled, Smith reported. ' Number three man Bob Corgan, out of Saturday’s match against Idaho because of an injury, will probably be in shape for the Beav er sets, Corgan stated last night. He pulled an abdominal muscle in a practice session last week when he delivered a hard serve. The muscle was strained two weeks ago in Seattle during the Huskie matches but did not go complete ly out until last week. , Corgan Ready for Playoffs Corgan said that he hopes to be ready for OSC on the 15, and if not then, he will definetely be set for the Northern division play offs on May 21 in Pullman, Wash ington. Coach Smith stated that he will hold a position tournament some time this week. Same changes in the lineup are expected to result. Looking up is Saal Lesser, current number two man. On the books, Oregon State has a chance of slightly beating the Ducks in the coming match. When the Beavers beat out Idaho 7-0, they took all sets, Saturday, Oregon dropped three sets to the Vandals.. Smith related that his men are gunning for a revenge win after the licking they took from the Beavers early in the season. «, J:i...
