Editor_BOB CHAPMAN, Business Manager Veterans Administration Gives Electric Typewriter to Classes The first electric typewriter for use in a one-handed veterans typ ing class has been supplied by Charles Steele, senior in journal ism, by the veterans administra tion. Steele is using the new post-war machine in a special class being offered disabled veterans by the school of business administration. Miss Jessie Smith is instructor of r7 ' the class of five ex-servicemen. Steele was the first to authorize the typewriter, a scientifically de veloped machine with a modified keyboard. Other members of the class will receive similar typewrit ers as soon as their papers are cleared by VA, J. D. Kline, assist ant registrar, said yesterday. Harpam Award 'Sing' Highlight Miss Bernice Rise, head of the circulation and reader’s consultant of the library, announced yesterday that the Josephine Evans Harpam cup will be awarded at the all campus sing, May 7. Awarded to the living organiza tion which is judged to have stimu lated among its members the great est interest in the house library program during the past year, the cup, which is new this year, will be presented by Dr. R. C. Swank, head of the library. Mrs. Harpam Donor Mrs. Harpam, donor of the cup, is a graduate of the University, and is active in the Patrons and Friends of the University library. She has given this cup “to stimulate the de velopment of student reading hab its which will aid their apprecia tion of the fine arts and increase their understanding of "current problems.” Living organizations participat ing in this contest must have been registered with Miss Rise since October, 1947, and they must have been continually active in the house library program. Judges Listed Karl Onthank, dean of personnel administration, Dr. Chandler Beall, professor of Romance languages, and Miss Bernice Rise will judge the contesting organizations. They will judge on: Number of books borrowed per the west coast. The students will receive the regular two credits for the course. To the ordinary observer, the chief difference in the new type writer is the variation from the standard keyboard. The electric machine has a scientifically de vised key system especially for use of the right hand. Machines are also made for the left hand. They become the personal property of| the student. The special typing course has resulted in special problems for Dean Victor P. Morris and Miss Smith of the business school, ac cording 'to Kline. They have spent considerable time preparing sets of exercises and a class program for use in the course.
