Lokan Strikes Out 11 Staters
But Bad Fielding Loses Fray
> By BOB REED
What the intermittent rain didn’t
do to hamper the chances of the
Oregon baseball squad of winning
the opener of the Northern Division
baseball race, the Washington
State Cougars did, by convincing
the Ducks it just wasn't their day
to play ball. Bob McGuire and Gor
dy Brunswick teamed to drive five
runs across the platter as the Cou
gars narrowly edged past the
Ducks, 7 to 6, yesterday on lower
Howe field.
The Cougars broke a 6-all tie in
their half of the eigh inning when
Tom Marier singled home the win
ning run. Although Whitey Lokan
held the Cougars to 10 scattered
hits, the WSC boys made sure ev
ery mistake the Oregon nine com
mitted contributed another run to
the Cougar total. Lokan was
charged for only four earned runs
and struck out eleven men, looking
very good in tight spots.

Today the Ducks and the Cou
gars meet for the second time on
tiie lower intramural field, the
game starting at 3 p.m. The likely
Jnurler for the Ducks will be Dick
Wilkins, and Buck Bailey is ex
pected to nominate Arnie Torgen
son.
The first two Cougar runs came
in the first inning and both were
unearned. Brayton walked. Marier
reached, first when Stratton
dropped the ball, and Brayton ad
vanced to second on the play.
Brunswick singled to center to
score Brayton, and Marier raced
from first all the way home when
Zurcher let the ball get passed him.
Lokan put out the fire himself by
fanning Jorrison on three pitches.
Ducks Strike Out
In the third the Cougars added
one more run. Hunter walked, Mar
rier was hit by a pitched ball, and
Brunswick came through with a
single to center.
The Ducks went down in order
in the first two frames and then
went into action in the third, scor
ing two runs during this rally. Bar
tie opened the frame with a two
base hit, Lokan drew a free ticket
to first base, and both runners ad
vanced on a passed ball. Stratton
beat out a bunt to make the bases
full of Ducks. Bartle scored on
Kirsch’s fly to left, and Lokan
crossed the platter when Kovenz
singled. Burgher drew a walk to

Starter Out
The Cougars added two runs in
the fourth, and in the bottom half
of the same frame the Ducks
knocked the Cougar starting pitch
er from the box. Zurcher singled,
and Cohen drove home both runs
with a long double. The rally faded
here as the next three men became
victims of the new pitcher.
The fifth, frame was scoreless for
both teams, but in the sixth the
Cougars put two singles and an er
ror together for their sixth run of
the contest. And in the same inn
ing, the Ducks tied up the ball
game as they batted the second

Bartle Hot
Bartle started things off with his
third hit of the afternoon, a single.
He went to second when the third
baseman bobbled Cohen’s grounder,
and both runners moved up a base
on a passed ball by the catcher. Lo
kan than smashed a single to right
field, with Bartle scoring easily,
and Cohen, attempting to score
from second base, was thrown out
at the plate.
All Over
That ended the scoring for the
Ducks. They tried hard to get an
other runner across the plate but
were unable to solve the offering
of the Cougar left hander.
Notes of the game: Tom Marier
robbed Burgher of a sure hit in the
sixth, by leaping high in the air,
to spear a drive headed down the
third base line. Two men were on
base at the time. . . . Burgher
threw out two base runners at
tempting to steal second. ... A
double by Walt Kirsch in the last
inning couldn't be matched by any
of his teammates. He was left
stranded on second as Kovenz,
Burgher, and Dibble tried in vain to
move him around.
