Harold Stassen was supported by three of the speakers, with the fourth preferring Thomas Dewey. All of the candidates believed in a clear-cut foreign policy, and the need of strong Republican leader ship. Bob Elliott, former state presi dent of Young Republicans and candidate at large, described Stas sen’s political background. Elliott, Stassen’s state campaign manager, supports the former Minnesota gov ernor because “Stassen knows all the answers and gives them to the people.” Foreign Relations Stressed Lars P. Peterson, candidate from Coos Bay, emphasized the need for good international relations. “Ameriga is the hope of Europe,” the Danish-born candidate pointed out, after describing a recent visit to Denmark. One of the three following types of training and experience is nec essary: (1) one or more years of accounting training, plus successful inside or outside selling experience. He supports Stassen, with Senator Vandenburg his second choice. Sox continued that the failure to date in setting up any firm, clear cut foreign policy proves the need for Republican leadership. Whatever happens in our election will be reflected in Europe,” he said, “and we must be sure that re flection is good.” Of any possible Republican candidates, Sox would oppose the nomination of only two —Taft and MacArthur. The sole supporter of Dewey, Ed S. Boehnke, chairman of the Lane county GOP central committee, said “The 1948 president must be a man who understands government, and understands it well.” Dewey, he said, has a govern mental knowledge that is unsur passed today. The Eugene candi date cited Dewey’s administration as governor of New York as an ex ample of the former district attor ney’s capability. “We need a man who can handle international affairs,” he continued. “We’ve been caught off base from Yalta on—and it’s going to take a lot to clean things up. “When people say we should not interfere in Europe,” he added, "They’re talking rot! If we don’t take the leadership the Commun ists will.” Boehnke, Peterson, and Sox are delegational candidates from the fourth congressional district. The speakers were introduced by Clay Meyers, president of the campus Young Republicans. Dean's Meeting Said 'Worthwhile' Mrs.*Golda P. Wickham, dean of women, returned yesterday from Chicago where she has been at tending a meeting of the Associa tion of Deans and Guidance Per sonnel. The meeting was held from March 28 through April 1. Mrs. Wickham, who reported that the meeting was “very worth while,” said one of the most out standing features of the conference was presented by foreign students in the United States, entitled "Ed ucation for Inter-Cultural Under standing.” Sarah Gibson Blanding. president of Vassal’ college, was moderator for the symposium. Another feature was a talk on “The Future of Education,” by Har old L. Taylor, president of Sarah Lawrence college. Mrs. Wickham will leave for Portland Monday to speak at a meeting of St. Helen's Hall moth ers and seniors.
