Cindermen Meet OSC Saturday in Eugene By EI-.WIN PAXSON John Warren’s varsity tracKmen win open ineir j.y'io nuuuem Division campaign Saturday when they hit the cinders against Oregon State in a dual relay njeet set for 2 p.m. on Hayward field. Warren will assume head coach duties this year with strength in the sprints and field events and noticeable weaknesses in the middle distance and distance races. Frosh sensation Dave Henthorne will bear the brunt of the burden for the Ducks in the 100 and 220 dashes, assisted by Leo Rubstello, a promising speedster who was un able to compete in 1947 because of injuries, and several newcomers. Henthorne Undefeated Undefeated in ND competition last year, Henthorne is expected to better his times this season. The Klamath Falls churner climaxed bis successful showing in his first year of college track by copping first in both the 100 and 220 in the conference meet at Seattle. Another first-year standout, George Rasmussen, is expected to continue his meteoric career in the pole-vault this year. The slim soph omore broke two dual-meet rec ords in conference battles last sea son, and went on to tie the first in the NCAA nationals in Salt Lake City. He is considered a strong prospect for a berth on the Ameri can 1948 Olympic squad. Added strength in the pole vault is furnished by another sophomore letterman, Don Pickens, who picked up his share of points in both that event and the broad jump. Good Javelin Men The Webfoots will also be strong in the javelin with four veteran spearmen on hand for the current season. Heading the list are Jim Porter and Lou Robinson, who both heaved the stick better than 200 feet last year. Also strong contend ers are 1948 letter winner■ Dick Shelton and varsity halfback Keith DeCourcey, who has yet to face col lege competition. Lettermen in the broad jump in clude Skiles Hoffman, Mercer Brown, and Don Pickens, in addi tion to Leo Rubstello, newcomer Lloyd Mitchell, and Bob Weber, a member of last year’s var sity team. Heidenrieh in Discus Top man in the weight contests will probably be Ray Heidenrieh, defending ND champ in the discus.. ' ~ _Z— Duck Nine Slates Cats by DICK CRAMER Coach Don Kirsch sent his Ore gon horsehiders through an intra squad game yesterday afternoon in preparation for the opening game of the season next Friday against Willamette university in Salem. The frosh held their first prac tice yesterday under the mentor ship of Barney Koch who guided the Jayvee diamond squad last year. The intra-squad game was the first good workout the varsity has had so far this year. Although the catchers and pitchers worked out inside Monday, the hitters were farther along and looked more ready for the opening games. Workouts Depend on Weather If the good weather holds out, Kirsch will continue to workout outside the rest of this week. He plans Thursday to name the travel ing team for the trip to Salem and Portland. The Ducks will play a double-header against Willamette Friday and a double-header a gainst Portland university Satur day. The rest of the preseason sched ule with home games to be played at the Civic stadium, includes: April 5 and 6— Salem Senators here. April 9—Willamette, two games, here. April 10.Portland university. two games, here. Herb Lawrence, and Wally Moore, while Brown, Wright, and Jim Boc chi appear to be the top three high jumpers. Warren’s greatest problem this year will be plugging the gaps in the 4-tO, 880, mile, and two-mile events. Aiken Clarifies Statements Oregon to the Rose Bowl, Jan uary 1, 1949? Webfoot football coach Jim Aiken has been getting much pub licity in the Pacific Coast papers lately about his alleged statements to the fact that the Ducks would play in the Rose Bowl game, come next New Year’s Day. The rumor all started brewing in Seattle when the Washington newspaper men put the question bluntly to Aiken. He answered, “Sure we’re in terested in the Rose Bowl. Ore gon’s one of the 10 teams in the Pacific Coast conference, isn’t it?” But Aiken denied ever saying that the Webfoots were all but playing on the Pasadena turf. The whole story had its begin ning during basketball season, when Oregon and Washington were playing at McArthur court. At half-time of one of the games, George Bell and Norm Van Brock lin, a pair of backfield top-notch ers for Oregon, were interviewed during the radio broadcast of .the contests. Bell, Vail Brocklin Talk At that time Bell and Van Brock lin stated that the Webfoots had a good chance of playing in the Pas adena classic next January 1. When Aiken went to Seattle re cently, he was immediately cor nered by the pressmen about Ore gon’s playing in the Rose Bowl. But Aiken made it clear that he had made no promises to the ef fect that his team would be a post season participant. Genial Jim also disclosed to the reporters that perhaps a Northern team could do beter in the Rose JIM AIKEN Bowl, since the Southern football squads hadn’t been showing up well. He had reference to Illinois’ 45-14 lacing of UCLA in 1947, and Michigan’s 49-0 shellacking of USC in 1948. The qualifying round will be 72 holes at the Eugene Country Club, and this must be completed by April 11. Returning lettermen for the defending Northern Division titiist Oregon team are Stafford, Rod Taylor, Dom Provost, and Bob Sederstrom. A darkhorse per former for the golfers is A1 Cros bie. In qualifying rounds yesterday, Stafford posted a scorching 65, including six consecutive birdies on the first nine. Crosbie totaled a 71. First match for the Oregon golfers is April 16 at Pullman against Washington State. April 17 at Moscow, the niblickers draw Idaho. The Northern Division play offs will be held in Eugene later this spring.
