Platter lines: Xo longer being overlooked
is a little number labeled "Four Leaf Clover,”
currently at the number 7 spot on Your Hit
Parade. "Clover" was first written in 1919
for the 88th Infantry Division, whose shoul
der patch was a four leaf clover. After the
war it was filed away with the other “also
rans" to Cohan and Berlin hits, and its
future seemed to be cobwebs unlimited.
Arthur Godfrey (the bad boy discjockey”
who rips up commercials that irritate him)
and the Joe Mooney Quartet of Broadway’s
nitespot row picked up "Clover” late last year
and began plugging it. Now the best avail
able discs are by Godfrey. Alvino Rev. and
by the Mooney combo, when vou can get
them.
Alvino Rev set his offering of "Glover"
to a strong, rhythmic tempo, spotlighting
solos by the piano, string basses, his own
electric guitar.}-] is chorus used the Moonev
"good party gang" style with every member
of the band joining in. It's good, verv good,
and will give the Mooney original a hard run
for the Parade's top spot.
We don't rate Godfrey iik the same class
with Rev and Mooney. His voice is not
strong enough to bring down the house as
Cyril Smith could. To clinch our choice, we
pick Rev’s old-timer flipover of "Spanish
Cavalier above Godfrev's "Thousand 1 si
lands Song.”
