    Berg, Lavey Sparkplug
Oregon to43-41 Verdict
by DON FAIR
A pair of wild-eyed, victory-minded V ebfoot guards, Reed}'
Berg and Bob Lave}', pulled the Oregon basketball team from
the doldrums last night to spark a 43-41 victory over the Idaho
\ mdals at .McArthur court. A crowd of 6000 was on hand to
witness the proceedings.
'Baking the lead from the opening whistle, the Moscow in
v.ders took advantage of the Ducks' sluggishness to trot off
at intermission with a 27-20 bulge. Oregon wasn’t hitting either
from the floor or gift line. The Vandals, playing a deliberate
g me. were continual!v breaking away for quick Igiske-ts.
Idaho maintained the pace after four minutes had been
played in the final half, leading 32-26, and then came the turn
ii g point. Bob Amacher canned a free shot, and \\ ilkins found
the range for a 30-loot one-hander to cut the \ andal lead to
three points.'
Berg Hot
Berg opened his display of for-keeps basketball. The fire}'
ted-head slammed home an underhand toss heading full tilt for
tl e bucket, and crashed into the first row of chairs behind the
basket. After a short breather, he was ready to.deal more -poi
son to the Vandals.
Iluskv Jim Bartelt broke a scoring slump with a beautiful
one-handed hoister from the corner to cut the Idaho lead to
34-33. Preston Brimhall, flashy Vandal guard, tossed in a char
it ■ but Berg' again rode home with the monev on a twine

clipping pivot shot from the key.
Oregon Leads
Slender Kecdv followed this with a free toss, nine minutes
remaining, to put Oregon into the lead for the first time, 36-,i5.
\\ ilkins pumped in another long backcourt swisher, but \\ en
ded Christensen, little Idaho forward, scored two quick baskets |
b put the Vandals ahead 39-38, with five minutes to go.
Bartelt delivered again, this time from the opposite corner, j
and Bavcv coolv dropped a free shot, which Dick Oeisler ol
the Moscow quint matched. With three minutes to play, little

Fiery Guard
Leads Way
Over Salem
By GLENN GILLESPIE
In their first home game since
January 16, a fast-brealcing crew
of Oregon Freshmen out-ran the
invading Salem high Vikings to
rack up a 52-40 win last night in
McArthur court.
There was a question about the
final score, since some observers
claim that Frosh Don Peterson
flipped in a free throw that wasn’t
counted. But either way, 52-40 or
53-40, the Ducklings came out on
top.
The Heldtmen started fast, run
ning up a 15-3 first-quarter mar
gin. Jack Keller, who played heads
up ball while scoring 16 points,
broke the ice with a free-toss with
five seconds gone. The Frosh kept
running, breaking through for sev
eral lay-ins.
Salem fought their way back in
the second quarter to bring the
half-time score to 25-14, Frosh.
Hugh Belligner, a smoothie with
his right hand, hit for seven mark
ers in the first half to keep Salem
in the running.
After the intermission, the Little ’
Ducks poured on the steam for a J
38-24 third-quarter edge, and |
dunked in 15 points in the final pe-,
riod.
Carlos Houck, a clever ball-1
handler and a good shot, was high J
for Salem with 15. Will Urban and
Bob Taggesell played their usual
A-l game under the boards.
The Frosh hit 21 field goals out
of 61 shots for a .344 average,
while Salem threw in 14 of 55
shots from the field, for .254.
The Frosh-Ashland game is this
afternoon at 2, and the Frosh-Ore
gon City contest follows at 6:15.
