    One Point Sinks Ducks Again!
Stolen Ball
In Last Secs
CostsGame
Pullman, Wash., Feb. 4 -(UP)
•—Forward Ed Gayda stole the
hall, raced down the floor and sank
a last-second field goal tonight to
give Washington State another
one-point victory over Oregon, 60
to 59, in a scorching Pacific coast
conference basketball game.
The Cougars, runners-up to Ore
gon State in Northern Division
standings, edged the Ducks 66-65
i:>. an overtime thriller here last
night.
Oregon battled desperately to
protect a three-point margin going
into the final 30 seconds tonight,
but Vince Hanson, the Cougars’
great center, narrowed the gap
with a two-point shot just 10 sec
onds before the final horn.
Hanson’s fifth foul was called
on him in the scramble after the
score. He left the game and the
Ducks chose to toss in the ball anti
, play keep-away in the last few
seconds.
But they reckoned without Gay
<:a, who makes ball-stealing' a
specialty. He grabbed the ball from
Buck guard Stan Williamson,
steamed down the court and sank
the two-hander which won the
game as 5800 delirious fans raised
t ie roof of Bolder gymnasium.
Oregon took an early lead and
ran up a 14-3 advantage before
V/SC caught fire and evened the
score 3-1-all by halftime. The
• < ougars went ahead 47-13 after
the intermission but the Ducks
soon regained the lead which they
i eld till the final seconds.
Hanson was high mart with 19
points while pivotman R o g e r
Wiley led Oregon scoring with 14
points.

Idaho's Phoenix Out
Because of Bad Grades
Moscow, Ida., Feb. 4.—(UP) —
University of Idaho’s basketball
hopes plummeted to an all-time
low here today when University
officials ruled ace center Jack
Phoenix ineligible from further
athletic competition because of
giades.
The 6 foot-9 inch pivotman rated
as one of the leading scorers in
the Pacific coast conference al
though his team has won only one
Northern Division conference
game so far this season.
Phoenix had scored 220 points
for the Vandals before being ruled
off the courts today.
The ineligibility ruling followed
a gloomy doctor's report that sec
ond-string guard Bob Linck would
be lost for the season because of
an ankle injury suffered while
bobsledding.
Coach Chuck Finley did not im
mediately indicate whom he would
nominate as starting center al
though his choice was expected to
be Jay Gano who has been doing
most of the relief chores at the
position.
Idaho faces Oregon in a two
JACK PHOENIX
game series here Friday and Satur
day nights.

Coach Carl Heldt has scheduled
a light workout tomorrow, in final
preparation for Friday night’s
game with the OSC Rooks at Cor

Urban still holds a slim lead in
little Duck scoring totals. The big
forward has put in 74 points for a

Salem, is second with a 67-point to

Ducklings Take All Firsts
Except Medley Relay
Oregon’s sparkling freshman
swimming team defeated West
Linn high school yesterday, 41 to
24, and set a new (rosh record in
the 160 yard relay, in a meet held
in the Men’s pool.
Oregon took every event except
the medley relay. In this event the
Ducklings highly touted squad got
off to a bad start which they
failed to overcome.
Louis Santos of the Oregon
squad was high point man for the
meet, with two first places and a
leg on the record-shattering relay
team to his credit. He turned in a
good performance especially in the
100 yard free style, which he raced
in the time of :56.8.
