USC Coach
Pronounces
Team Set
Los Angelos, —(UP)—• Coach
Jeff Cravath of Southern Califor
nia, came up with his theory on
how to beat Notre Dame Saturday:
“To heck with defense,” he said.
"You can’t win a ball game with
defense.”
Although ho has no Johnny Lu
jack, the Trojan coach does have a
couple of men who can rifle a ball
George Murphy and Jim Powers,
’i he former was throwing tricky,
short passes while the latter heav
ed them long and right into the
arms of his receivers.
Sending his varsity against the
junior vai'sity and fourth string,
Cravath was gratified as the first
team marched down the field time
after time.
Backs Look Good
The drives were sparked by
veteran back Mickey McCardle
v« ho broke loose for numerous long
gains. McCardle’s drive was match
ed by the running of Don Doll,
Gordon Gray, Ted Tannehill and
Bill Betz as they clawed their op
position aside.
“Of course that’s noi.
Dame in front of them,” Cravath
admitted, “but the boys are really
pitching. Win or lose, there’s going
to be a whale of a ball game
Saturday."

his fleet crew of paddlers under a
rigorous training schedule. The
varsity boys should be in tip-top
shape by the big day.
Holcomb Returns
Kireilis will hold practice ses

Basketball League
Next for Men's IM
By WARD BEBB
Intramural volleyball is at an
end, but with only a short lull the
spotlight turns on “A” and “B”
basketball and handball. Basketball
season gets under way on Monday,
January 12, according to present
plans.
The league will be. set up on a
round-robin basis. Living groups
and independents entering only one
team will be placed in the “A”
league.
According to 1947 rules upper
division players cannot see action
in the “B” circuit, but so far not
enough players nave been turned
in to organize a “B” league. A “B”
tournament is expected to take
shape by playing time, however.
All entry blanks are to be turned
in to the IM office not later than
January 6.
Participants playing handball
will play on an elimination basis
with two singles and one doubles
making a team. Athletic managers
are asked to turn entry blanks into
the IM office or Jim Vitti imme
diately.
The “new look” is not new. It is
merely a reversion of taste to the
18th century styles.
