Webfoots Take Close 47-45 Tilt By DON FAIR A timely basket by Marv Rassmussen.his only one of the game, with two and a half minutes remaining, gave the Oregon cagers a narrow 47-45 triumph over a not-too-highlv rated Portland university quint last night at McArthur court. A crowd of 3000 turned out to see the YVebfoots first home preseason contest, but the Ducks •didn’t put on much of a show as they had to come from behind when the usual scoring punch was 1 lacking. With a little over four minutes to play, Oregon trailed the shorter, yet scrappier Pilots, 42-38. Stan . Wiliamson, high point man for the evening with 17, cut the distance to two points when he dribbled • around the key to sink a cripple. Rog Wiley's tip-in of William son’s foul toss knotted the score at 42-all a few seconds later. Bob Devich, Portland scoring ace with 13, pushed the Pilots again into the lead with a charity throw, but Williamson nullified it when he sank a free shot to make it 43-43. Bartelt Hits Rugged Jim Bartelt then inter cepted a stray Portland pass and let fly from 10 feet out with a perfect swisher to put the Ducks ahead. Jack Winters, Pilot center, • again tied the game at 45-apiece when he tapped in a rebound. This set the stage for Rasmus sen's game-winning shot a half minute later. Wiley grabbed the 1 ball off the Portland board, drib bled half way down the sidelines, (lid fired a pass to Rassmussen, • all alone under the opponent's basket. Ducks Stall The Webfoots hung desperately to this 47-45 lead until the end, al though Portland, twice in the last minute, took the ball out of bounds, ■ rather than shoot a foul toss, in m endeavor to knot the count. The Pilots served notice that they were going to be a tough team from the opening whistle when Winters caged two quick ones for a 4-0 lead. Oregon trailed until nearly nine minutes were gone when Bartelt hit a long set shot from the side for an 11-10 edge. Late in the first half, the Web toots put together a lone scoring . ppree when Archie Gacek, Wiley, and Bartelt hit three rapid baskets to give Oregon a 24-17 bulge. But Mush Torson’s team came back strong and trailed 24-23 at half. Pilots Match 0 Again in the last 20 minutes, Portland matched the Ducks point ful-point, although behind at one t>me 84-29. It looked for a moment like John Warren's men were going i .i run up a safe margin. Portland, -however, in rapid-fire o r d e r squelched this bid by taking the lead themselves, 39-37, four mi nutes later. The Oregon quint just couldn't find the basket range in the game. '1 ime and time again they raced •tlown the floor, only to have clear set shots and lay-ins stray from the hoop. On the other hand, Portland was playing heads-up ball, setting up tueir plays in pattern-like fashjon. Sky Artist Heavy work by Rog Wiley, tower ing Duck center, lias been a big factor in tin* past four Oregon vic tories. Wiley lias'displayed the pre war form that give him the North ern Division scoring crown with his action under the backboards so far. The Rose City team controlled the backboards the better share of the game, which was unexpected since the tallest man on the Pilot squad is 6-foot 4-incli Winters. Stan Shines Williamson was the standout for the Ducks, playing until he fouled out with 3 minutes remaining. Even he was missing good shots. Rasmussen and Gacek looked the best for Oregon on the backboards,: I Please turn to pat/e fire) I Cage Head Hands Out Heavy Drill Don Kirsch took over the coach ing reins of the Frosh basketball team yesterday and stressed heavy conditioning during the two hour practice. Yesterday’s workout was the stiffest this season for the 45-man squad. After jogging around the gym for loosening-up purposes the Freshmen hopefuls got down to the business of the day. Included were running, passing, and jump ing drills, defensive maneuvers, and dribbling practice. The session was topped off with four intra-squad scrimmages of ten minutes each. Heldt expects to start cutting the aspirants at the end of this week. Eventually the team will be narrowed to about 20 members y/ith the possibility of a few more being dropped by the end of the season. Meefs Old Mates_ Bob Wren, former Oregon forward, met his alma mater in battle Mon day night when he performed in the lineup of the Fees Rollerdrome in ' dependents. The hefty backboard ace netted four points from his center j slot, but the independents lost, 80-43.
