Palouse Junket Begins Today Guard Combo- Berwick,Meland To Lead Carnivorous Webfoots By FRED TAYLOR Ted Meland and Jim Berwick, alternating right guards, were named co-captains of the Palouse hound Oregon grid team for the weekend hattle with the Washington State Cougars, at the conclusion of Thursday's practice session. Meland fills the guard position on offensive plays, while Ber wick relieves him on defense. The Oregon team leaves for Portland today at 2 p.m., where thev will board a plane for Spokane. Plans call for the team to spend the night in Spokane, and then travel to Pullman by bus Saturday morning. Last workout before the Saturday battle was concluded yes Torctay with the Webloots concen trating on adding luster to their running attack. Fast going on the Cougar turf may greet the Ducks, an reports indicate that the field may be frozen. Snow flurries have also been reported in the college town so the Eugene club may be up against a new element this week. The gridders worked without pads in their final session but Coach Jim Aiken showed plenty of respect for the often-defeated Cougars as he warned the Ducks that the fray would be a rugged affair. Oregon will again call upon its newly-developed power attack to do a big share of the offen sive duties, especially if snow makes the ball-handling diffi cult. Van Brocklln’s aerial prow ess lias been virtually unused in tlie last two games, as a power ful crew of groundmen have been flic workhorses. Alternate sets of ball-carriers will again see action, witli Jake Leicht, Jim Newquist, and Bob Koch operating together; and t eith DeCourcey, George Bell, and Bob Sanders in the other set. Defensive tactics aimed at stopping Jake Leicht. were the order of the day for the Cougars. Washington State scouts were highly impressed with Leicht’s ball-packing capabil ities in Oregon’s last games and re ported that the Webfoot halfback is a threat any time he gets the ball. With the recovery of Fullback Bob George, who lias been on the injury list, the Cougars are in top physical shape for the game. George is the only Oregonian on the Cougar roster. He comes from Milton-Freewater. Coach Phil Sorboe is not sure of his starting eleven but has named several players that are sure of considerable action. Frank Bacoka is a certainty at one end position and is highly regarded by Sorboe, Andy Lazor at center is another two-year letterman that needs no introduction and is deserving of the starting nod from Sorboe. Big Boh Doornink is another sure-fire reg ular at a tackle slot. The Cougars can call on a number of versatile backs to match tricks with Leicht e.t al. Billy Lippincott, Dean Eggers, Gordy Brunswick, Don Paul, Jerry Williams and Bob George are all No. 1 backs that can pass, run and kick with the best of them. In addition they have the find of the year in Hal Akins, who has turned in several spark ling performances. Akins scored a pair of TDs in the Portland game Saturday and set up a third with a 31-yard punt return. BIG GAME TONIGHT4! Sixth Phone 4957 1 Frosh Mentor Drills Wet Weather Unit By ELWIN PAXSON With a muddy, slippery field virtually assured for Saturdays game, Frosh mentor Carl Heldt said yesterday that he would start the same hefty forward wall that has seen opening action in the past two encounters, and a “mudhorse backfield. Heldt disclosed that Big Jim Hanns, former Eugene high star, has been tentatively shifted to left half for the Portland game, where his power and speed can be used to best advantage in running the T-formation plays on the soft, treacherous turf. Replacing him at the tailback spot will be John Parsons, a 185 wbn will win the nod over Steve Button and Bob Sutton because of his all-around defensive and offensive ability. Rounding out the backfield will be Earl Stelle, rifle-armed Med ford ball-handler, at quarterback, and Dennis Sullivan, whose com bined drive and speed assures him a berth at right half. On the flanks will be Doug Coghill and Dick Mobley, who will be the principal targets for _X Bear Story BERKELEY, Cal. — California found itself down to its last right halfback Thursday as breakaway artist Jack Swaner once again was counted out of the Washington game Saturday because of a sprained ankle. Stelle’s passes. Beside them in the tackle slots, Bill Marker and Hank Cedros, who have both shown steady improvement since the season began, are slated for starting duty. Chet Daniels and Art Harris, a pair of 210 pound ers at guards, and a defensive stand-out, Dave Gibson, at cen ter, round out the first eleven. Thursday’s workout consisted of a scrimmage between the second and third stringers, while the start ing squad ran through signals and worked on offensive and defensive punting maneuvers.
