Series to Open With First-Hand Talk on France First speaker in the University lecture series to begin October 23 will be Dr. Gordon Wright, asso ciate professor of history, Rudolph H. Ernst, chairman of the series announced last week. Dr. Wright Will talk on the “Anatomy of the Fourth French Republic” and will be the first of 12 speakers to lec ture in the 1947-48 series. During the war Dr. Wright worked for the state department on French affairs. His division sur veyed policy covering every region of the world. Foreign Service Early in 1945 he transferred to France. His trip with foreign ser vice personnel to Paris while the war was still in progress was made via Portugal and Spain. Dr. Wright has received his in formation on the French repub lic first hand. In Paris he worked on the diplomatic side of "foreign service in the embassy, his job being known as ‘^professional political reporting.” Besides Dr. Wright, other local speakers in the series wil be Percy John Powers who will talk on the Spanish author Cervantes. This lecture will be give in commemor ation of the 400 birthday of the anuthor of “Don Quixote.” Local Men Lecture Herbert H. Hoeltje, senior pro fessor of American literature, Ed mund A. Cykler, associate profes sor of musicology, and M. D. Ross, assistant professor of architecture, will round out the program of local men to lecture this season. Dr. Hoeltje will talk on either Emerson or Hawthorne, Dr. Ernst said while Cyklers has chosen “Contribution of Musicology to Humanistic Studies” as his lecture topic. Ross will discuss Peruvian architecture in his series speech. \ * Wesley House To Hear Speech Continuing with the current se ries on "Christian Behavior,” Wes ley house will hear Rev. L. O. Grif fith, pastor of First Methodist church, at the regular Sunday eve ning forum this week. He will speak on “Christian Behavior and the Church.” This meeting will be the third in the series of six. Future topics will include: “Christian Attitudes on Liquor,” led by Rev. Ellsworth Til ton; "Christian Behavior in Busi ness and Labor,” with Dean Victor P. Morris in charge; and finally "Christian Attitudes on Compul sory Military Training" with Dr. Charles Howard of the law school acting as moderator for the forum. Sunday’s meeting will start promptly at 5:30 p.m. with the reg ular buffet supper. Immediately fol lowing, colored slides of the annual Wesley Student Fellowship meet, held last summer at Lake Tahoe. Will be shown. The public is invit ed. Judson, DG Pix Set For Monday Memembers of Ann Judson and Delta Gamma will have pictures taken Monday for the 1948 Ore gana by Kennell-Ellis studio. Other houses scheduled for next week are: October 21: Delta Zeta, Gamma hall. October 22: Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Kappa Gamma. October 23: Pi Beta Phi, Sigma Kappa. October 24 and 25: Susan Camp bell hall. Y Dance Classes Start Square dance, rumba, tango, and samba will be taught at the folk dancing classes at 7:30 p.m. at' the YMCA Friday evenings ac-1 cording to instructor James Chan. Chan was in charge of the pro gram last year and studied folk dancing at the University of Cali fornia this summer.
