Egg, Truman Favored
Once it was “Black Friday;” yesterday it was “Truman Tuesday”
The reaction to the first meatless Tuesday was mild- The wo
men liked the vegetables, and the men were just plain philosophic.
At th Sigma Nu house, the Emerald surveyor was told by telephone,
“We ail talked about meat, but we got by.” Most of the comments
were of this “We’re doing all right, but we’re getting tired of eggs”
type.
John Straub was hardest hit. No one said much until the football
team who perhaps are in the “invalid” class came to dinner. They
had steaks “this big, and with juice oozing out of them,” as one on
looker exclaimed. However Pi Phi and Kappa houses reported that
their football team ate the same food as their sisters.
An unofficial spokesman for one of the vets’ dorms said in an un
happy voice that the “boys” did not like meatless Tuesday. “It’s too
much like.rationing.” Then, brightening, he added as an afterthought
that they had had a very good dinner—creamed turkey. (In the plan,
turkey is not considered meat)
One girl whose uncle raises cougars, agreed heartily with Truman’s
plan. “My uncle starves the cougars one day a week—on Sunday.
Maybe it’s good for humans, too.” she said.
