Ducks Go 71 Yards The Ducks topped a sustained 71-yard drive early in the second quarter to score first, after a give-and-take first period that saw both squads threaten but never quite get across the goal line. Oregon's successful attack star ted from the Oregon 29. Van Brocklin cut loose with a 20-yard pass to end Dan Garza who was dropped on the Nevada ?9 for a •first down. Three line plays moved the ball to the 37 for another first down. On the next play Van Brocklin fired the pigskin 32 yards to Gar za, who made a sensational catch on the five with two Nevadans clinging to him and staggered a eross the goal line. Jim Newquist’s extra-point try was wide, but Ore gon led 6 to 0, and it looked like the Ducks were going to roll. Oregon Attack Rolls And roll they did, with a 79 yard drive that was stopped only one foot from the promised land. But that was as close to scoring as the Eugene club got the rest of the day. Oregon took the ball over on their own 20. after the kick-off, and passed and ran the pigskin down to the Nevada eight-yard line. a quarternacK sneak gained a yard. Doubleplay Rooks Take Frosh By 27-19 Margin Staters Score Three Late Touchdowns When Little Ducks' Pass Defense Wilts By ELWIN PAXON Sparked by the brilliant passing of halfback A\ alt Kelly, a bulky Rook eleven scored three times in the final quarter to defeat the Oregon Frosh 27-19 at Bell field Saturday. A stiff Duckling line paralyzed the Rook running attack throughout the last half, but the Staters had little trouble solving their opponents’ pass defense to overcome a 13-/ defi cit in the final minutes of play. The Baby Beavers’ first tally came soon after the opening kickoff as Kelly unfurled a pair of 25-yard heaves from lus own 40 Ron Barret crashed over for the score from the two. and _____ Arvicl Niemi’s conversion gave the I Rooks a 7-0 lead. Stelle Scores * Oregon, less than six minutes later, racked up its first score on a quarterback sneak by Earle Stelle, after tailback Jim Hanns and right half Gene Miner had moved the ball from the OSC IS to the 2. Chet Daniel missed the try for point and the Frosh trailed 7-6 at halftime. The Ducklings took the lead in the third quarter when Stelle hurl ed a 35 yard pass to left end Doug Coghill, who virtually stole the ball from two secondary men on the Rook 25, and romped over for the score. Daniel’s kick made it 13-7 for the Frosh. After tieing the count, the Baby Beavers took advantage of a blocked kick to forge ahead 20-13. Jim Hannis’ boot was blocked and recovered by the Rooks on the Frosh 20. Here Kelly unleashed another aerial for the tie-breaking tally. Kelly Passes for TD Again- the Rooks took advan tage of the impotent Duckling pass defense, and Kelly pitched the Staters to a 27-13 edge, with five minutes remaining. Then the Frosh uncorked their final scoring surge of the afternoon with fleet footed Dick Maudlin skirting the ends, and Stelle tossing passes, the Little Ducks moved to the Rook 1 yard line, and Steele again bucked across on quarter sneak, making the final score 27-19. The Nev York Yankees’ keystone combination of Phil Rizzuto (top) to Snuffy Stirimveiss started the final doubleplay of the World Series yesterday which meant the basball world championship for the Yanks over Brooklyn.
