Saturday Clash Looms Texas Team To Fly Today For Duck Date Determined to keep their num ber one spot in national ratings, the University of Texas football squad will board a chartered plane late today on the first step of their Portland flight. Coach Blair Cher ry, his assistants, and 0 team members are due to arrive Friday 'in time to work out on the Multno mah turf. Their coming tangle with the Webfoots will mark the first appearance of the Longhorns on the Pacific coast. The Longhorns walloped a sup posedly tough Texas Tech team last week and they need only to get past the Ducks before reaching a scheduled toughie against North Carolina. Layne Top Passer Pitching Bobby Layne, heralded as the best collegiate passer in the nation, is the key man in the Texas attack. With their speedy half backs burning up the gridiron last week, they didn’t have to call often on their hard working quarterback bdt he still completed five out of six tosses. Layne’s favorite target, Jimmy Canady, will take care of the receiving end along with the t.wo starting ends, Max Bumgard ner and Ralph Blount. Harris Moves Last year’s glaring weakness in the line appeared nil in the Tech game. All-Conference Center Dick Harris has been moved over to plug the tackle hole. On the other side of the line, 205-pound Charlie Ta tum will work alongside Joe Mag Jiolo. Despite his weight, Tatum doubles in the spring as a top .■•printer in the 440-yard dash. Magliolo is trying to regain at guard the all-conference title he earned as blocking back in 1943. Speed to spare will be furnished by Byron Gillory, Billy Pyle, Perry Samuels, Ralph Ellsworth, Jimmy Canady, and Ray Jones. One other speedster is Allen Lawler. He cracked the 100 meter world's rec ord this summer in a close race with the Ducks’ Dave Henthorne at the AAU meet in Nebraska. The pre-season All-American pickers jumped to pick Layne as one of the top four backs in the country. A deadly passer and pack ing plenty of power when he runs, Layne was kept off last year’s top selections by Doc Blanchard of Army. This year he stands in the upper list with such men as John ny Lujack of Notre Dame and Charlie Justice of North Carolina. He is the man that makes the Or angey and White click. Picking his team on the basis of last week's performance, grid rat er Paul Williamson picked Texas ns the top team in the nation, with the the Webfoots holding the 25th spot, two places below the Texas Tech team just trampled by the Xionghorns. "O" Men to Initiate Lettermen Today Initiation for all lettermen of last spring term in baseball and track has been set for Thursday, October 2, at the Sigma Chi fra ternity house at noon, Ed Dick, president of the Order of the ’’O." disclosed Wednesday. The team and coaches leave at 3:30 p.m. Friday by bus for' Portland and will arrive too late for a workout that day. The only chance the Webfoots will have to test the Multnomah ' . _ _ 4._£ ,,.:n Pictured above is Cowboy -lack Crain, who held down the left half back slot on the 1941 Texas Uni versity eleven. Crain was one of the razz ’ina ’day//, boys of Coach Dana Bible's revenge hunting Ling horns which slaughtered the Web loots 71 to 7. Cruiser Dick Was There Above pictured right tackle Dick Aslicom was at bis post for Oregon’s Wetifoots at the 1941 Austin' massacre. “Cruiser Dick” saw only sparse action because of injuries. Frosh Gridders Ease Workouts Oregon’s frosh football squad got a temporary respite from their training grind yesterday afternoon as they spent part of the practice session filling out the required PCC eligibility papers in the PE build ing. Coach Carl Heldt also spent con siderable time explaining defensive tactics in the first chalk talk of the season. Tomorrow, however, the Ducklings will swing into ac tion with a scrimmage. The frosh will likely concentrate on offensive tactics’ because the season opener is only a little more than a week away. Heldt said that he would em phasize the team’s offensive power in the next workouts, and proba bly would not work on defense un til the frosh T-formation attack functions smoothly. Aiken to Talk Tonight University of Oregon’s head grid Coach Jim Aiken will be heard to night over radio station KUGN when he is interviewed on a Coast to-Coast ABC hook-up. Aiken is ex pected to give his views on the im pending clash between his Web foots and the University of Texas Longhorns. There was an estimated increase of 10 to 25 per cent in the number of anglers in the U. S. in 1946. stadium turf will be shortly be fore game time Saturday. Aiken sent his charges through a hard workout Wednesday, but didn’t allow the squad to scrim mage. The head man is taking no chances that a last minute injury will knock out a key man. The team worked without pads, but turned in a rugged afternoon. Still pounding away at the de fense tactics that are hoped will stop the fast-moving Longhorns Aiken expressed satisfaction at( the way the players are picking up the newly-introduced variations. The coach has also revealed some offensive maneuvers that he has been reserving especially for the Longhorns. Good Shape Physically the team is in nearly top condition. Only minor bumps and bruises resulted from last weekend’s contest, and every man on the traveling squad is ex pected to be ready to go against the Texans. Only 37 men will be taken to the Portland game, as conference regulations allow only that num ber to be carried on the squad to a game of over 50 miles distance from home. In contrast, the Tex ans will bring 40 men when they fly from Austin today. Kicks Practiced Closing minutes of yesterday’s session were devoted to practice* kick-offs. Guards Jim Berwick and Ted Meland each tiook a turn at making the opening boot, along with tackle Steve Dotur. Norm Van Brocklin also demonstrated, his kicking prowess in a short punt return practice. The young quarterback did all the kicking for the Webfoots in their first fray, and will probably do the majority of it Satuday. Enemy Coach Coach Blair Cherry who suc ceeded Dana Bible as headman at the University of Texas, who will bring his grid gang to Multnomah stadium Saturday for an afternoon date with Oregon’s YVebfoots.
