The win evened the civil war series at a game apiece, and put the Ducks back into third place in the Northern Division. The Aggies, after a 27-minute dis pute on a play at third base in the sixth frame, made it kndWn that they were playing the contest “un der protest.” The only question now arising is on what grounds do they have such a claim, and if so, to whom will the protest go? The play, which drew the wrath of the Oregon State team and in particular their Coach Ralph Cole man, came with two out in the sixth, Oregon leading 2-0 and Ran ny Smith on third, A1 Cohen on first. ' With Day at bat, Cohen streak ed for second, and Beaver hurler Pete Krueger wheeled off the mound, looked at second and then rifled the ball to third, Smith slid ing back. The base umpire first ruled the Oregon man out at third, with Oregon State leaving the field. Hobby Claims Balk Webt'oot coach Howard Hobson then charged onto the field, claim ing a balk on Krueger. Realizing that he hadn't seen the play, the base urap 'asked the plate judge to make the decision, and he ruled that Smith was safe at third, ord ering Oregon State back onto the field. For nearly half an hour Col man wrangled, stalked, and threatened with the arbiters, at one time refusing to send his team on the field. Finally the State coach gave in and allowed the game to go on, only under pro test. During this time, the Beavers were arguing with spectators in the stands, Coleman getting into a heated debate with one fan. A few spectators started on the field, but the situation was never out of control. Ducks Score in Fourth Oregon broke the ice in the fourth stanza, Bob Santee starting the surge with a half-swing single to right field. Tony Crish followed with a bounder over second, San tee continuing to third. Roy Carl son then lofted a high twisting fly Baseman Don Bower wandering to short right, Beaver Second under the ball, and dropping it for an error, giving the Ducks a 1-0 edge. Oregon came up with another Singleton in the sixth as Carlson, with one gone poled a hefty triple into right field. Smith promptly batted him in with a bad-hop one baser off Shortstop Bud Fortier's arm. Krueger Wild In the seventh, Oregon took ad vantage of Krueger's wildness to score three markers for a 5-0 lead. Walt Kirsch opened with a walk, and Dick Burns laid down a sac rifice which the Aggie hurler tossed to second too late to get Kirsch, Santee walked' to fill the bases, and then Crish smashed a terrific grass-cutter cleanly through Bower at second for a hit, Carlson’s long hoist batted in scoring two runs, the tally of the inning. The Web foots added the last one in the eighth on a pass to Kirsch. Burns' line-double over third base, and a long fly. OSC Nabs Series Opener at Home A three-run outburst in the eighth inning, aided by a two-base bobble, enabled Oregon State to capture the first game in their se ries with Oregon, 9-8, at Corvallis last Saturday.
