Cockburn Cast as*Archbishop 'Scheming, Coniving Character' By JANICE KENT In Joan of Lorraine,” the University Theater production opening at Guild Hall Friday evening, Keith Cockburn, fresh man in liberal arts, takes on the role of the Archbishop of Rheims and Kipner, the elderly Broadway actor who portrays the Archbishop in the play. This role is an entirely different problem for Cockburn who appeared in “The Green Pastures” as the high priest of Israel, in The Yellow Jacket” as The Chorus, and in “Dark of the Moon” ' as Uncle Smelicue. The Arch bishop of Rheims is a scheming, coniving character using his high church office as a shield, and even as a vehicle, for his diversive ac tivities. - ' The Archbishop is in league with the Duke de Tremoille. They con vince Joan to have the Dauphine crowned, knowing that they can sway the ruler to their side and continue to profit from the war and finally have Joan put out of the way. Although they exchange few words in the play, their panto mime reveals that they are part ners in a deep ocnspiracy. The Archbishop has little re spect for his office or the cere monies of the church. It is val uable to him only as it advances him politically and increases his influence. At the coronation of the Dauphin he says, “When I've dug up a little of this dried up, conse crated oil from the ancient chalise on the point of a golden pin and annointed you (the king) with it, you will turn on your enemies with very different prospects.” As Kipner, the character de fends Mary Grey, the leading lady, •in the belief that the play should be rewritten to portray the saint properly. He feels that she is too \^jUing to compromise with evil and too quick to abandon her mis sion. As the Archbishop he is Joan’s worst enemy. He obviously believes that man must have some faith and, whatever it is, it must bear “crit ical examination.” He has made Director Masters contradict this hypothesis in “Joan of Lorraine.” Mary Grey and Kipner uphold the philosophy.
