Ill, enfeebled, and almost a crip ple, Nitti had only his 27 National Democratic Union adherents in the 555-member constituent assembly, plus the prestige of an elder states man long regarded as a financial expert to uphold him as he accept ed the mandate from Provisional President Enrico de Nicola. Coalition Wanted Undermining his position, appar ently, was the repeated declaration of Communists and Socialists, sec ond and third largest parties in the assembly, that the new government should be based on results of the elections of last June. By leftist reckoning that would be another Christian Democrat - Socialist - Communist coalition such as Al cide de Gasperi’s which broke down Tuesday. Airplane Bosses Want U.S. Orders ,NEW YORK, May 16 (AP—Promi nent aircraft manufacturers will tell congress Saturday that unless government purchases of airplanes “are authorized the industry will face bankruptcy. Supported by high army and navy officials, ’they will say that they need a guarantee of at least 5000 plane purchases a year by the mili tary services. The indicated number that budget plans for fiscal 1947-48 permit would permit is 1500. I | Porter Fears Chain Reaction DENVER, May 16 (AP)— Paul I Porter, who headed the American j economic mission to Greece, assert ed Friday night that collapse of that Balkan nation would produce a ^ “chain reaction” which “Would not only shatter the structure of the j United Nations but would in addi tion confront democratic powers with an impossible dilemma.” “This cannot be permitted to hap pen,” Porter said in a speech deliv ered to the first regional conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organiza tion. “America’s reesponsibility has been proclaimed to the world. It must now be made effectivee.” Duk Soo Meeting To Greet Soviets SEOUL, Korea, May 16 (AP)_ The Korean “anti-trusteeship so ciety” Friday scheduled amass meeting on the Duk Soo palace grounds to coincide with the ar rival Sunday of a Soviet delega tion to renew negotiations for a provisional government of this di vided country. A Soviet advance party of three is due in Seoul Saturday, and the remainder of the 75-man delega tion is expected Sunday from the Russian-occupied northern half of Korea. Talks with American represen tatives are due to begin Tuesday, as agreed by Foreign Minister Molotov and Secretary of State Marshall. The actual number of languages computed by officers of the French Academy is put at 2,798.
