Oregon Nine in First Place Hal Saltzman Allows Four Hits To Blank Bailey's Circus 6-0 By Associated Press Hal Saltzman hurled a four-hit shutout for Oregon Wed nesday to defeat Washington State college! 6 to 0 at Pullman and put the Ducks a notch ahead of WSC in Northern Division standings. Oregon’s big scoring splurge came in the third inn ing when Johnny Kovenz hit a right field drive which bounced over Don Aries’ head for a three-run homer. Saltzman, who hurled the Ducks to a division pennant last year, kept the hard-hitting coug ars well in check throughout. Best showing of the Staters was in the fourth inning when they got two consecutive hits, but the threat fizzled out. Santee Singles Oregon opened the scoring in the first with Bob Santee singling in Walt Kirsch, who had singled and advanced to second on Dick Burns’ sacrifice. In the third, Santee and Tony Crish singled to set the stage for Kovenz's homer. The Ducks scored twice more in the seventh when Kirsch doubled and scored on a single by Santee who romped home on Saltzman's double. The teams meet again today. Netters Win The University of Oregon rncketnien clouted a Willamette university team 7-0 yesterday in Salem. This weekend the Duck Net ters make the Inland Empire trip, playing Washington State Friday and the Idaho Vandals on Saturday. -- i .i ■ —. TUNIOR WEEKEND Have those cottons clean and fine. Appear neat and flowery in freshly cleaned clothes. 1 Wins Second Game . . . Tall Hal Saltzman, lefthander on Coach Howard Hobson’s Duck baseball nine, shut out the Washington State Cougars yesterday, (i-0, to bring his win-lost column to 2-all. Track and Field Men Prime For Cougar Test Saturday By AL PIETSCHMAN With just one more day of prac tice left before facing WSC at Pullman, Colonel Pill Hayward and John Warren sent all track and field men through a tough workout yesterday. Both coaches agreed that the Conugars will be a tough op ponent and are priming all their men for a hard meet. The Cougars are undefeated so far in conference competition, de feating Montana and Oregon State: in one-two order. The Cougars had no trouble in knocking off the Griz zlies and left the Corvallis contin gent in the rough after' two or three events were run off last Saturday on Bell field. Nebolon Fast Dave Henthorne, Oregon’s fresh man flash in the sprints, will face Joe Nebolon in the century and 220. Nebolon has been clocked in a :9.9 in the 100 and a :22 in the 220. Last year the report from Pullman way was that their ace sprinter Louie Christensen had blasted off a :9.8 100 and he was touted as the in vincible Cougar. Came the track meet at Pullman and Christenson folded up when Lftcht poured on the steam. Times from the Inland Empire have been misjudged before and although the Oregon track coaching staff isn’t ruling out Nebolon, they are consid ering his accomplishment with a grain of salt. Norene Favored Off-form in his Seattle run, half miler Stu Norene will find himself favored to win the race at Pullman. The fastest their 880-man, Bill Par nell, has done is a 1:58 and Stu has clipped below this. In Seattle he iidn’t have the speed to match Jim Hencssey but he is ready for Par nell. Both Jim Porter and Lou Robin son will have their first real com oetition in the javelin toss when they run up against Don Cooley. Cooley has a 191 foot 6 inch mark. Both Porter and Robnison have beaten this mark, Robinson by a good ten feet and Porter by a foot, but with the eagle-eyed WSC offi cials on hand anything can happen. . (Please tarn In patje five) il Duck Gridders Polish Offense The Oregon gridders romped through a lengthy scrimmage ses sion yesterday under the watchful eyes of Coach Jim Aiken and his staff, as they polished up their attack for their intersquad game Saturday. Norm Van Brocklin and Bill Abbey alternated in the key quar terback slot, and both did impres sive passing. Dan Garza, Darrel Robinson and Pete Miller were.on the receiving end for most of their heaves. * Backs Good The fullbacks drew praise as Bob Koch, Bob Sanders, and Ken Maine tore through the line for long gains. Keith DeCourcey and Bob Oas were also making good yardage from the right half spot. In the line Brad Eckland at center and John Kaufman at guard were opening gaping holes through the center, and Don Stanton was a tower of strength at tackle. When the Webfoots trot on the field Saturday afternoon, it will be their first public appearance under their new coach Jim Aiken. It will be a full length contest played under regular game conditions. Mentor Promises Aiken promises to use the same wideoper, tactics that made his Nevada team one of the national top offensive gridiron squads last year. It should be a fair preview of what Duck fans can expect to to see the Lemon and Green do next fall. .. .. ■ - A Perfect Gift for your Mother on Mother's Day here.
