University ROTC Wins Approval Of War Department Inspectors By june McConnell That the University.ROTC unit seems to be coming along fine in its training, was the comment made by Colonel J. W. Thompson, senior inspector with the board of inspectors on the campus Monday and Tuesday for the annual war depart ment examination and inspection of the military school. Colonel Thompson was in charge of inspecting the infantry unit of the department and Captain Bosworth from Hamilton Field, Calif., examined the local air unit. Two of the other officers in the group were from Fort Lewis, Wash., as was Col. Thomp son. It was explained by the colonel that all high schools and colleges having ROTC units are inspected annually all over the country dur ing the period of April 15 to May 25. Board no. 7, the inspect ing board of which Col. Thompson | is in charge, inspects all of the 1 military departments in' Oregon, Washington, and the University of Idaho, he added. “Our next stop this week is the Hill Military aca demy in Portland,” the officer in formed. When asked about some infor mation on himself, the visiting colonel said that he had been sta tioned at Fort Lewis since Janu ary. As for his war record he modestly replied, “I think that the local department is the important feature in this story.” It was was learned from other sources though that. Col. Thompson was held a prisoner on Bataan during the war years. The inspector added that the official rating from the war de partment on the local visit would be sent to it in a few weeks. Sigma Xi to Elect Leaders in May The May meeting of the Univer sity chapter of Sigma Xi, national science honor society, has been postponed one week to May 12 at 7:15 p.m., according to A. L. So derwall, assistant professor of zool ogy, and Oregon president of Sigma Xi. Election of 1947-48 officers and reading of the chapter’s history will be among the business to be taken up at that time in 204 Chapman hall. Advertising Fraternity To Initiate Ten Pledges Alpha Delta Sigma, men’s na tional advertising fraternity, tapped ten men for membership Wednesday evening, according to Bob Chapman, vice-president of the organization. They arc Paul Landsdowne, Bob Wallace, Dan Mindolovich, Don Persinger, Winston Carl, Bill Bish op, Bob Chaney, Paul Basche, George Alexander, and Joe Ingram. The pledges will be ini tiated later in the term. They will perform their initiation stunts during Junior) Weekend.
