^JJN Asked to End Palestine Mandate LAKE SUCCESS, N. Y„ April 21 (AP)—Egypt formally proposed late Monday that the forthcoming special session of the United Na tions assembly put an immediate end to Britain’s 25-year-old man date over Palestine and declare the Holy Land an independent country. This was the opening move in an Arab states’ campaign to seek a final settlement of the Palestine problem at the session beginning next Monday instead of waiting un til the regular meeting in Septem ber as Britain suggested. Feris El Khoury, Syrian delegate to the security council and leading Arab spokesman here, indicated that he also planned to submit a n proposal to give the Palestine ques tion a thorough discussion at the special session. He refused to indi cate, however, how his plan would differ from the Egyptian proposal. Knox to Present Xylophone Concert Pierce Knox, blind xylophonist, will be featured tomorrow night in a free concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Guild hall in Johnson. Between numbers a demonstration of the braille system of writing, and an explanation of how braille books are made for the blind will be pre sented. Knox, who is regarded as one of the most phenomenal musicians of all time, was awarded first place of all American high schools Tojo Defense Angers Judge TOKYO, April 22 (AP)-1The in ternational war crimes defense ar gued Tuesday that President Tru man’s recent “contain communism” statement was just what former Premier Hideki Tojo and the 24 other Japanese on trial “have been saying for years"—but the refer ence was ordered stricken from the record. Stricken with it was a second de fense comment: “One look at the map today will show what has hap pened to Russia’s neighbors and for mer neighbors both in Europe and Asia.” Both remarks were made while Defense Attorney Aristides G. Laz arus of New York City was attempt ing to show motivation of the Jap anese defendants in their prewar China and Manchuria policies. The prosecution contended that neither remark had any bearing on the trial, and Chief Justice Sir Wil liam Webb asserted that Lazarus was “taking sheer delight in insult ing” Russia by proclaiming his ar guments “to the whole world, while the court is considering the matter.” at a national contest. Asked if Austria would be brought up again on the agenda, an official spokesman said it wras probable, but he declined to elab orate. It was apparent, however, that the meeting had failed to reach any definite agreement on major issues. Faint Chance Seen A high official source said therei still was a faint chance some agree-1 ment might be made on the Aus trian treaty. It was the second semi-secret session of this conference. The action was taken on sugges tion by Secretary of State Marshall. It followed a declaration by Rus sia’s V. M. Jews Cheat Noose By Bomb Suicide JERUSALEM, April 22 (API Two convicted members of the Jewish underground committed suicide in the death row of Jeru salem prison Monday night by detonating small amounts of ex plosives against their hearts short ly before they were scheduled to be hanged for acts of terrorism. Clad in the traditional red garb of the condemned, the two men had been confined in death row for more than two weeks. Police said the detonation of the charges did a small amount of damage to the cell. The suicides were announced a few hours after some 80,000 Jews in Jerusalem were placed under virtual house arrest in a rigid cur few imposed to prevent demon strations or retaliation for the carrying out of death sentences by British authorities.
